Hi all,

My Lucas Series 2a alternator broke the bolts in the end plate when it was being stripped down for a refit

(bearings and brushes). If you have an alternator which is unfixable (windings shorted or similar) I may be able to use the bracket end.

Alternator? Series 2a had a generator, not an alternator. If it has an alternator, it is a later replacement, possibly off a Series 3 (mine is, for example). Should have some identification on it, and parts are likely to be available from an auto electrician.

G'day All, I thought only the Series 3 was fitted with an alternator as std, all my Series L/r's (except Bloodbox) have generators cheers Dennis

OK OK, Ya got me flaunting my ignorance!!

But still, it's a lucas alternator same as was used in many english cars of the day so........

If it is a Lucas generator, not an alternator, parts will be available from some older auto electricians - very common; I think some Holdens had them. If it is an alternator, any auto electrician will have parts.

If you clarify whether that it is a generator, it is likely that people here have dead ones lying about - they are very prone to wearing the end bush and poling (with windings burnt out as a result) either through lack of lubrication or dust.

All owners should remember that they need regular oiling.

I think you will find its a Lucas 16acr alternator. From memory I think they are a 45amp output with an external regulator.

As you say they are common. What part are you chasing exactly?

Thanx for the replies guys. It is definitely an alternator!! As for them being common, I work in spare parts and the big suppliers no longer carry them. The auto lekkies I have spoken to have checked their scrap piles and no go. There is a regular on e bay that flogs em new for $125 starting bid but I would like to repair mine. It is externally regulated but I have put a Bosch I had lying around in there to get me going. So. if you have a dead lucas I'd be interested........

If it helps some late model Holden Camiras had a Lucas 45 ACR Alternator which is (I think) similar to earlier type Lucas Alternators; like those in the Series 3's etc... I recently put one of these in my 64 Cortina and although not original it works a treat, increased output and they're still fairly plentiful.

The Landy one should be something like a Lucas 16ACR. This is stamped very clearly one end on the aluminium housing. It is possible to use the alternators off of minis, the 18ACR. These have exactly the same casings but run at a higher output. Both of these are available readily in the uk if you can't find them here, although there must be heaps of them in breakers that wreck series 3 trucks.
