Ralph enjoyed a day out on the Gold Coast at a local car show recently with the Tardis and GCLRO. I thought I would show off the old and the new. It was a good day out with lots of old mini's, Alfa's BMW's and all the new Land Rovers as well. They even had The Land Rover Experience there but they wouldn't let me put Ralph over the test track. Truth be known, they probably didn't want to see Ralph out do the new D4

    Hi all
I have been trying to figure out why Ralph pop's out of 4th on overrun, I had a chat to an old friend who checked out the reconditioned gearbox before I fitted it and he seemed to think the detent springs on 3rd and 4th were, for some reason a bit lighter tensile steel than the rest. I was speaking to Wayne at MR Automotive and he assured me that all the springs, except reverse, should be the same, so I have ordered and received a new set of spring, plus seals, which I will fit this weekend if the weather turns/stays ****ty, but, if there is a blue moon tonight, and by some miracle there's not a cloud in the sky tomorrow, then the motorbike comes out of the shed instead, and it might end up being an overnighter to a country pub somewhere.
    Have a good weekend all.
    Cheers Ian

What? You're going to have an all nighter in a pub and then rebuild gearbox?
Oh hang on, I get it, you'll be too drunk to realise how daft you are

Ralph is looking great in the sun with the top rolled up!

I'm sure you knew this already, but they tell me those saggy canvas sides can be made to look a bit neater if you insert a broom handle, or similar, when rolled up. Just saying.

    cheers,

    Garry

The weather forecast was too good, so we ended up disappearing on the bike for 7 days out to western QLD which was a lot of fun (cold but fun). I haven't had a chance to hook into it yet, too much 4wding, camping (PIC 1), servicing the wife's and kids cars and bloody work getting in the way. Hopefully I can do it this weekend if it stops raining here on the Gold Coast.

Hi Garry, I like the idea of the broom handles,I didn't know that trick, that will come in handy, I might just use a bit of 25mm electrical conduit ( I have a shed load at work) The roof works a treat and looks good. SWMBO and I took Ralph for a long run last weekend, ended up doing a dirt road and took a track off to the side which turned out to be a bit steep and rutted. Ralph just took it in his stride and walked it, it was only on the way back down that i realised I was still in 2wd . I am toying with the idea of finding and fitting am overdrive as I am still constantly going for a 5th gear when I am over 50mph, or I might just have to slow down a bit and enjoy the scenery.
    Cheers Ian

Well i finally pulled the finger out and removed the floor to replace the selector springs. (We fitted a rebuit gearbox early last year )Anyway ralphs nice and quiet in angel gear! After spending 45 mins looking for the bloody springs ( forgot the safe place i wouldnt forget them place was&#128556, i found the 1,2 spring and the reverse springs were in a about face, the shorter one is reverseImageUploadedByAULRO1452926032.232107.jpg. Fixed that up, left the floor out and went up around the block, its not as quick to pop out in over run now but still does on a long over run down the hill, any ideas what might be causing this please.
    Regards Ian

Mine still occasionally spits it out third gear, if I stay awake, it just needs a push to keep it in , especially if I lift off, but just pushing the gear stick now and then while in turd seems to work.
But I have another box to fit hopefully to solve this problem

I might just have to keep an eye on like you do Harry and hold it in place , but after going to all the effort we did to change the box, especially to fit the original 6 cyl bell housing, it would be nice to not have to pull it out again.
