    S2 tyre speed rating.

    I know this may be a weird question, but does anybody know what the tyre speed rating was for a 1960 Series II by any chance. There seems to be lots of talk about them being 7.50R16 but thats about it.

    I do not think that tyre speed ratings existed in 1960, so the question is meaningless.

    The only tyres specified were:-

    88 Avon or Dunlop 6.00x16
    88 Avon or Dunlop 7.00x16
    109 Avon or Dunlop 7.50x16
    88&109 Michelin XY 7.50x16 (radial)
    109FC Avon or Dunlop 9.00x16

    Later models (2a) included the option of Goodyear crossplies and Michelin Sahara, and for NAS models and those fitted with 9.00x15 Michelin Sahara tyres, 15" wheels. Also, 6.50x16 became an option.

    It should be noted that the only manufacturers of radial tyres in 1960 were Michelin and Pirelli.

    Australian assembled Landrovers would have been fitted with locally made tyres, and in 1960 these probably would have been Goodyear or Dunlop, most likely RTM or Roadtrak or similar. Radials were virtually unheard of in Australia in 1960, and I did not hear of them being fitted to four wheel drives until the mid sixties, and then only for sand work - they were considered to be much more prone to damage and were also very expensive. I don't think other offroad radials appeared until the 1970s.

    John is correct, Australian assembled (and imported fully UK assembled models) from 1950 were fitted with locally produced tyres as part of the Australian content rules. Originally these were Dunlop and Olympic Bar tread and Locally moulded Dunlop T28. Later models right through SIIa were also fitted with Olympic APL (all purpose lug) and as John suggests Dunlop RTM and I have even read Hardie bar tread listed in the Grenville books for SIIa. Into the Late SIIa and SIII along with the others, Goodyear Custom Extra Grip were also fitted OEM.

    You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
