    Re fire wall

    Hi Marcello!
I see you are in Vic. I have a 70/71 firewall, it is the same as the 2A one you spoke about earlier as it has the wiper motor in the left hand end of the dash and cable operated wipers. It is in good condition everywhere except for one footwell (Easy replacement). No rust near hinges etc. It is for sale and you are welcome to have a look to check out differences etc. I'm in Vic near Ballarat.
    Cheers Andy.

    thanks andy.

sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. i am really after the fire wall that does not have the wiper motor in the dash left hand compartment, the early type. thankyou any way though, very nice of you to offer.

This is a Series III one but the identifiers are the same...

Note the sloping panel forward of the gearlever. On 4 cylinder models this panel is further forward and vertical.

It is worth pointing out that 6 cylinder firewalls for a Series IIa are relatively rare - the 6 only came out in 1967 and Series IIa production only lasted until 1971 - a run of only 4 years. I am lead to believe that the 6 pots were also less popular than the 4.

Four cylinder firewalls ran from 1958 to 1971.

PS - I think the cable operated wipers came out in 1967 (or was it '68?) as well, so if you are looking for non-cable firewalls (ie: twin lucas wipers) then that pretty much does you out of the 6 cylinder firewall market anyway!

Correct Andrew. The most easily picked way to distinguish the four and six firwalls is that the panel in front of the gear lever is vertical in the four and well in front of the front door edge, where on the six it has a slight slope and is only just in front of the door edge.

The cable operated wipers came out in 1967.

Less than 5% of Series 2a were six cylinder, although this percentage may have been slightly higher in Australia, so six cylinder firewalls will be much less common. For the Series 3 there was probably a much higher proportion in Australia, particularly considering that the Army ones were all sixes, and this was as sales were cut into by the Japs.

The firewall designed for cable operated wipers can be used with windscreen wipers mounted on the windscreen simply by blocking off the holes. If you are a purist, these would have to be welded up, but simply using rubber blanking plugs would be in keeping with Rover practice for other unused holes.

Not that it is a definative answer and JD has described features of the firewalls well, however the original colour on most 6 cyl from 1968 onwards was a light yellow/cream colour where bronze green firewalls are almost exclusively 4 cyl.

The colour (or is it shade) grey isn't much help as there were both 4 and 6 cyl with the grey colour.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Hmmm, my 6cyl IIa with a really good firewall etc is just sitting down in the paddock at the moment. You lot are making me think I should bring it up to the house and cover it over!

Interesting point! I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense...

I thought my SIIA shorty ute had a 6 cyl firewall - but it doesn't look like the one in that picture. Mine does not have the strip between the trans tunnel and the firewall and the firewall is vertical, not sloped. It looks original to me, but the car has had a resto by a PO sometime ago so its hard to say. The problem I have with it is that the firewall protrudes so far back into the cab that the heater (shin burner type) wont fit between the gearstick - also the hand throttle I have wont fit because it sticks out past the "dash". Anyone have any idea what firewall I have?

    Cheers,

    Adam
