    Gearbox or Clutch Problem?

G'day everyone. I hate to say but I've neglected my princess.. I haven't had the chance to work on my S2 for almost a year now and I've decided to do something about it!

Just after putting a Holden 173 in her she got tucked away and forgotten about as i have just started a plumbers apprenticeship. She came to life in seconds this morning (with some petrol down the carby) but i can't seem to drive off in first gear? I can select each gear and i can drive around in low range but first gear high range takes off as though its in third?

I can't really work out why, would this be a clutch or a gearbox problem? I thought it could be rust on the clutch as its been sitting for a while but i can still select gears without grinding?

If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated!

From what you say it would not be a clutch problem, as you can select gears and drive in low range. I can see two possibilities.

The first is that it is perfectly normal, except you have forgotten how it drives, possibly exacerbated by the engine not pulling properly at low engine speeds, so it stalls in first high.

The other possibility is that it is never selecting first or second (and you are getting third and fourth instead), but low range is so low geared that you did not notice this. Third gear low range is roughly the same as first gear high range, so it should start off quite well in that gear. If this is what is happening, the problem will be the gear lever is not selecting properly - remove the floor and transmission tunnel to see what is happening.

    Thanks for the advice John,

You were correct. After using it more it is easier to drive, i did notice that the brakes were grabbing a little and the petrol pump wasnt working to its full capacity. Little things that didn't encourage positive thinking..
