From what you say it would not be a clutch problem, as you can select gears and drive in low range.  I can see two possibilities.
The first is that it is perfectly normal, except you have forgotten how it drives, possibly exacerbated by the engine not pulling properly at low engine speeds, so it stalls in first high.
The other possibility is that it is never selecting first or second (and you are getting third and fourth instead), but low range is so low geared that you did not notice this. Third gear low range is roughly the same as first gear high range, so it should start off quite well in that gear.  If this is what is happening, the problem will be the gear lever is not selecting properly - remove the floor and transmission tunnel to see what is happening.
