    capstan winch

Another Landie arrived yesterday (much to her disgust) a bit rusty, 2a 68 ex mil probably FFT by the hatch covers on it. Anyway it is fitted with a capstan winch which I am told is fine (or would be if the 2.25 petrol engine was running!!)
Can anyone tell me if this would have been standard fitment and anything about them.

good little units, got a few traps about them if you dont know what you're doing with them.

Bit like a highlift jack in that respect, they're great till something goes wrong then its usually fairly spectacular.

Im chasing down the drive and linkage set for one or a second complete one if you do wish to part with it.

these were fitted to some military Landy's. have a look in REMLR (or post your chassis number and someone will) to see if your vehicle had one originally

Thanks Dave but I actually paid $500 for this one sight unseen specifically for the winch so I'll be sticking with this one, I'll keep my eye out for another for you though.
I will get the numbers and put them on in a few days.

Is that the one that was in the Cairns Post last weekend? I was thinking of doing the same... By the way, if it is an FFR I would be interested in the tailgate - need to change my GS tailgate for an FFR one.

G'day All, I could be wrong here, but I don't think Capstan winches were fitted to Series Land Rovers (ex-mil) after about 1964, so it's possible that it was fitted by a P/owner, the Bamford transmission winch was pressed into service and mounted on variants of the L/r, cheers Dennis
