    Fuel pump

    Hello All,

I need to replace the fuel pump on my 2.25l petrol this weekend, and I was wondering if you guys have any tips for me before I get cracking.

I'll be replacing the outlet side fuel line as it's looking a little tired, and I've also been told that it's worthwhile putting an in-line filter before the bulb. This seems like overkill to me, but I guess it won't take too much more effort, so I might as well.

    So, any thoughts?

    G'day jc109

I gather that you are totally replacing the fuel assembly? as they are repairable with a kit, the old Goss kit number was 966KT but I don't know the Fuelmiser part no, I would suggest that you fit an inline disposable filter Ryco type (Z14ka from memory) before the pump between the solid chassis line and the pump that should negate the need for the filter before the carburettor, it has been noted that with the current fuel having ethanol in it,which has reportedly damages rubber components, a filter before carby bowl might possibly be a wise thing

    cheers

    Thanks UncleHo,

Yes I'm replacing the lot. I was quoted $94 for a kit from one of the big auto parts places, and then phoned a supplier in Vic who could send me a brand new complete unit for $110 including postage to WA. Not a hard decision.

Thanks for the tip re the in-line filter. I'll definitely put one in now.

    Cheers

That quote for the repair kit sounds rediculous. The last one that I purchased would have been about $30~40. I can find the part number if you need it.

overhaul kit for the mech pump should only be about $40 including postage.

when you put the kit in dont forget that its important to centralise the diaphragm when you put it in. To do this assemlbe the pump and when it comes time to tightening the 6 screws that hold the plunger side of the mechanism to the pumping side put them in 2 turns each, make sure that the diaphragm is correctly held then operate the plunger a couple of times. Screw the screws in all the way, back them off about 1/2-1 turn operate the plunger again then tighten them up to the specified torque (10-15 inlb from memory or Tight with the hand held screwdriver).

while its apart play close attention to cleaning the ball/check valves and the accumulator thats usually where gunk likes to find its way to.

Thanks guys for all your advice. I've got the parts I need now, so will get cracking today. Let's just hope it all remains pretty simple once I start.

New pump is on, with a Ryco in-line filter in place too. Now, I can't seem to get the fuel running through the system. Should I fill a jerry can and just over-fill the tank until it runs through? So far despite all my efforts there's no fuel in either filter, and apart from what was left in the carby's reservoir there's nothing left in the lines to fire up the car.

The fuel pump has a priming lever that if you pump it should get petrol through the lines as far as the pump.

I have no idea if it works properly though as I replaced mine with an electric one .

Nah, that doesn't seem to solve it Tim. Thanks for the suggestion, but I haven't had any luck with that pump. I was aware of the lever, as it was the only way I was able to limp home recently, by pumping fuel into the carby and running off that until it was dry, stopping, and repeating the process. Now, when I pump it I can't get the fuel to the pump in the first place. Both filters are dry. Should I just keep pumping and be a little more patient?

Right. This is getting beyond a joke. I've replaced the pump new for old. No filters in line either side, so it's all pretty clear. Filled her up. Car started first time. Idled beautifully. Loaded the back up for a camping trip this weekend. Took off down the road and the same problem reared it's head. It seems to be getting worse every time despite all my efforts. New points. New pump. New lines. What do I do? Oh by the way, please excuse my formatting, as I'm writing this on my phone as my girlfriend and I sit in the car waiting for the tow truck before heading home to swap gear between cars. I've made her weekend that's for sure. Any suggestions?
