    Detroit Locker

Hi all, I've decided to fit a Detroit Locker to the rear of my 186 powered Series 3 109" Salisbury, and a Detroit Tru-Trac to the front. I know the front assembly is not that strong, but I'm only fitting a Tru-Trac to the front so it won't be fully locked (I want to be able to steer too). I have old bar treads and would say I 4wd pretty slowly compared to others.

I'm after some opinions from people here, is there any need to fit strengthened axles to the Salisbury?

I've read that Detroit Lockers are likely to break if an axle breaks, does this also apply to the Tru-Trac?

For the last 4 years I have run a Detroit Locker in a Series 3 Stage 1 Salisbury,
I too was concerned about the axles so I ran the originals for 12 Months then figured that after 25 years of use that they wouldn't be at their optimum.
I purchased a brand new set and ran them for 6 Months to discover that I had twisted them so I bit the bullet and bought some Maxi Drive Axles.

Interestingly the original axles were unscathed despite being given a much harder time than the new ones.

I find them to be an excellent device noisy sometimes and they do have some strange habits on side slopes but overall I am happy.

If you intend playing in the Harvey hills I wouldnt go the automatic diffs.
Air lockers!!!!! At least you decide when you need the diff locked.
There are times when a locked diff is VERY inconvenient, like in the side of a greasy hill. Can be scary!!!

Too late...already on their way. Thanks for the tip though, I'll see how they go and watch out for those instances.

Detroits are normaly locked, and only unlock when going around corners. So they should be fine on sand.

TTs are generally fairly kind on axles. If you lift a wheel with a TT, it will spin. You can dab the brakes to get the other wheel to turn, however that can be hard on axles if not careful.

I bought them from the US with a pair of metric bearings sleeved to fit the imperial carrier in the front and a 4.7 ring gear spacer ring for a total of $1150US including post. With the current exchange rate $1235Aus

I'm currently fitting the rear locker into my Salisbury, but I've noticed my Landy manual does not contain any section on the Salisbury diff. Does anyone know what the torque settings are for the 8 bolts that hold the two halves togethor? I've found settings posted elsewhere, but I'm not sure they are for a S3 Salisbury.

If you mean the bolts on the rear cover (my book shows 10 off) the torque is 20-25 lb/ft,

Thanks, is that in a standard Landy Series 3 manual? I have an original hard copy and an electronic copy and neither cover them.

On information I got in another thread Salisbury torque settings it looks as though I have done them up at too low a torque. I'll have to pull it out and do it again.
