Sorry im new to lond rovers and have just brought a series three, but am after some info on my gearbox. For starters it has four levers not three and no where can I find a picture of a gearbox with four levers. Is anyone able to help with the solution to what the fourth lever may be?
Its at the back on the right, just to the left of the hand brake.
Funnily enough I just picked up one today for it for 25 bucks, bit of a bargain. I think you might be right about the overdrive, im just not sure if its working. I thought it was the 4wd in out lever. so had it in the out position, bit embarrassing really. I was was looking on youtube today about how to drive the thing and figured I had it wrong.
If it wasnt working would it make funny noises etc or just be buggered, its a fairly industrial lever, not small like most overdrives ive seen on other cars.
If it comes out of the side of the transmission tunnel it is almost certainly an overdrive lever, probably for a Fairey overdrive.
Back is normal direct drive, forward one notch is neutral, and two notches is overdrive, as stated about half a ratio higher (and almost certainly noisier). Do not use it in any gear except 3 and 4. It is likely to be low in oil, and should be regularly checked - dipstick on top of it, accessible by removing the panel under the centre seat.
There are other overdrives, but the Fairey is by far the most common (and also the most fragile!). A search on this site using the word "Fairey" will retrieve a lot of information.

Thats it, comes out the side and was bloody noisey when it was in (why I thought it was 4wd lever). If its in neutral, will that mean no drive at all and why not the other two gears?
Thanks for the help by the way, ive searched for the last four hours trying to solve this.
This is the best pic I have (sorry it's sideways). You can see my overdrive lever in the bottom - near the centre seat. (It is in the normal position)

Yip thats it, except my lever is a bit more tractorish.
As John has said they are very fragile - before you do anything, lift up the seat in the middle, access panel underneath and check the oil - it has a filler cap/nut with dip stick attached. Put some oil in it then try again.
This might be useful

When you get the hatch off -- take a photo , post it up and we can then identify the overdrive type.

Good news, plenty of oil and very clean, which sort of goes along with the fact the gearbox was rebuilt.
Secondly its made by fairy winches ltd.
