    Which oils?!

Need to replace some of the oils in the old girl over the weekend and haven't changed them in a S3, 109, 2.6l before... oh she is on LPG too.

I've gone though the manual and this is what I have so far, please help me fill in the blanks! Probably just use Penrite oils as I get it very cheap, friend works there

    -----

    Engine Oil.
Type : either 15w/40 or 20w/50 or do I use a LPG one or even a FULL SYNTHETIC, ... not sure which one ??
    Qty : 6,8lt + 0,5lt for oil filter + 0,5lt for air filter

EVERYDAY DRIVING 15W-40 - Penrite Oil
EVERYDAY DRIVING 20W-50 - Penrite Oil

    -----

    Gearbox.
    Type : SAE 90 EP
    Qty : 1,5lt

    Transfer Box.
    Type : SAE 90 EP
    Qty : 2,5lt

    Front Diff.
    Type : SAE 90 EP
    Qty : 1,75lt

    Rear Diff.
    Type : SAE 90 EP
    Qty : 2,5lt

    Swivel Pin (each).
    Type : SAE 90 EP
    Qty : 0,5lt

For all of the above Gear oil (excluding the Engine) , is this ok HYPOID 80W-90 - Penrite Oil or should I use the 85w ? HYPOID 85W-140 - Penrite Oil ?

    -----

    Thx Matt.

Not sure about which oil Mat but I do remember contacting Penrite once to enquire about one of their oils for my S1. Try emailing them,

    Cheers Charlie

I really, really like 15W-40 diesel oils in (older) petrol engines. Much more robust additive packages than most petrol engine oils and keep things nice and cleeeeeaaaaan

The downside with LPG is that it can lead to nitration of the oil, just look for one that is LPG compatible or just change out at 'normal' change intervals, don't go for the extended ranges that you can often go with LPG due to cleaner burning than petrol as a fuel.

In the gearbox use a multigrade, not a straight grade and preferably a manual transmission specific one, your gear changing will be much nicer.
If you want to lash out try something like Redline MT90 or Castrol Syntrax whatever the equivalent is in Penrite's SIN range, I'm pretty sure it would improve the gearchange in a Series.

A multigrade 75W/80W-90 in the t/case and diffs would be OK too, (particularly coming into winter) and if towing an 80/90W-140 in the Sals is good as it gets really hot in use.

Straight grades are fine if doing longer trips, but take a fair while to get to working parts higher up in colder weather and if doing short trips stick to a multi-grade.

    Hi Matt,

Cast your eye over this in the 2/2a section. Some information there (mostly from Rick130) was very useful to me. But, I have a straight petrol 2.25 so our situations differ slightly.

FWIW, I used Penrite HPR Diesel 15-50 and it's been running brilliantly for the last 5-10 kilometres since

In your 1st post you said yours was 2.6 is it a 4 or 6 cylinder? but it shouldnt mater to much either way both the 2.25 and 2.6 motors used the same inservice as it was easier for supply but some people get real fussy about their oil

Yep, but IMO their Transaxle 75 would be even better.
It's a 75W-90 manual gearbox/diff oil that will give a better change when cold and should be a nicer change when hot too.
It shouldn't be too exxy as it's a conventional oil base.

    Castrol's Multitrax is their equivalent.
