    Stub axle seal sleeve

    Hey all

I went to do wheel bearings and axle seals today and found that the "sleeve" that the seal mates onto is scored fairly badly.

It looks replaceable to me, ive heard some of them arent.
    Is this right?

    Thanks
    Ash

the lip on the stub axle itself isnt replacable however it can be sleeved by a speedy sleeve.

Some of them ARE replaceable aren't they?
Could the stub axle be machined down so I can fit one of the replaceable types?

if that lip has previously been speedy sleeved then yes the speedy sleeve is replaceable.

if thats an "as new" item then no the lip that the seal runs on is not replaceable but yes, it can be machined down and then fitted with a sleeve.

Replaceable up to 1980 or thereabouts, not thereafter. I would be rather dubious about turning the stub down - it will certainly be hard surfaced, and that is a high load area on a critical part, and it is likely that the strength depends on the finish and radius where the stub axle tube changes to the mounting flange. I would not risk it.

Sorry if this is a hijack.
I've noticed on a front axle there is a seal on the inside of the hub that prevents the differential oil mixing with the wheel bearing grease, however, on the rear axle there is no seal so the diff oil mixes up with the bearing grease. Why?!?!?

Unless I am mistaken (could be new for the S3 - most of my experience is S2a), the seal you refer to is between the swivel and the diff not the diff and the wheel bearing. I suspect the reason is that the oil level in the swivel is different from that in the diff, plus the possibility of leaving the swivel at a very incorrect level if parked on a slope.

the series stub does not have an oil seal inside it as the same oil that lubricates the front axle UJ also lubricates the wheel bearings. there is a seal inside the axle tube on the front to stop the swivel oil draining out of the swivel housing and into the front diff. The diff oil does the same job in the rear axle.

JDNSW is on the money, the swivel oil level is higher than the diff oil level
