Had a good look behind the speedo, all seemed secure and reasonably clean and tight. Just two green wires running off what I assume is the voltage regulator. They dissapear into a wiring loom which itself dissapears down behind the dash.

Haven't had a chance to retest as am now repairing exhaust...will up date once back on the road.

Sometimes the regulators can be connected the wrong way around. But that will upset both temp and petrol guage, symptoms seem to point to sender or guage, neither which last for ever. I bit the bullet and fitted an electrical VDO temp guage which is much more accurate.

May have fixed it by taking it out, looking at it and putting it back! (got enough earth now?). Needs a longer run to check for sure, but that means I need to remedy exhaust problem....
