    leaf spring removal question

    G'day,

My question is, if I remove 1 or 2 leafs, de-rust and lube/teflon coat the remaining ones, will I actually notice a big difference in ride, comfort etc?? Or am I dreaming.. (yes I realise its a landy)

FYI - I have a series 3 GS that feels as if it has no give unless there is at least 500kgs in the back. the entrie tub will skip off the ground if I go over a speed bump at more than 5 clicks!!!

I'm not to worried about loss of towing/haulage capability, but still want to be able to go off-road and carry the odd thing about.

    cheers
    Jim

    Firstly I am no expert...

we recently redid "zara's" rear springs used newer ones from a 109 and undid all he leafs and repacked with the main and helper from the 109 with some from zara's...let the tyre pressures down and she rides like a coil sprung now..well nearly she is a older landy after all

I think it would make a big difference, I plan to do the same.
Have at look here, some interesting info - Optimizing Series Land Rover suspension

The military springs are very heavy, if you can find a good set of original civvy SIII 109 springs, you will find the leaves are made of thinner material and will respond better to your needs.

The de-scaling, painting and lubricating the spring packs will make it work better.

Grommit on this forum regularly puts his civvy SIII up on the hoist with the axles dangling and pumps old sump oil between the leaves. The the ride of that vehicle is very comfortable.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
