remember the 5 systems electric, lubrication, ignition, compression, fuel i think thats right
Hi all,
I have a Series III petrol, and I feel like I have tried absolutely everything to troubleshoot my starter motor problems. I am really hoping someone here can give me some advice.
When I turn the key, the engine just won't turn over. I have replaced:
I have wire brushed every terminal shiny clean, and examined every possible thing under the bonnet. Could this be engine related rather than electrical? If I roll start in reverse or second gear, it starts instantly and runs beautifully. Once I have it going after a roll, I can stop, then using the key, start it again. But it will only turn over for a couple of seconds and then cut off again. (in other words, tries to start easier when warm.) It has always been a great running car, but this problem has developed over the last month or so, and has got worse and worse.
- the battery
- earth strap
- starter motor
- solenoid
Obviously this is causing me a lot of aggro, as I can only ever stop my car on a slope, in order to roll start it!!
Please give me any ideas you can think of, to get my car starting again.
p.s. i put the battery and starter motor on my other series III, and it could turn the engine over easily.
Also, the engine oil on the dipstick is crystal clear, but have noticed in fresh oil leaks, that the oil came out dirty grey with smeary white in it. could this be related to the problem?
thanks.

Is the starter trying to engage or just not doing anything?
I'd suggest you try using a bit of wire to trigger the solenoide then shorting out the posts on the solenoid to see what its doing, you might have dodgy connections on the starter.

Had a similar (intermittent) problem with my 2A. It turned out to be a dry/crap connection on the main starter cable (from solinoid to starter) at the starter motor end. Shorting out the solinoid terminals did nothing, but jumpering from battery direct to terminal on the starter worked. Only happened when starting from cold. Replaced the entire cable and no more aggro.

the engine runs fine, but the engine still wont turn over even with the sparks plug removed.
yes it is TRYING to engage. it does about one revolution per second. but then after about five turns just stops altogether.
Are you getting enough power to the starter
It sounds like you have voltage drop, as pop said check all connections also feel the cable if its getting hot
Adam
grab your jumper cables, hook the earth directly from the battery to the startermotor then with the positive hooked up to the battery start bypassing the sections of the cable from the battery to the starter.
I suspect tho that when you have put the cable on the starter that you have turned the stud in the starter and have pulled the cable away internally.

You have said you have checked the earth strap - is that the battery to earth or the engine to chassis earth? If you did the battery to earth strap - you need to also clean up the engine to chassis braided strap.
Just in case you may have missed this.

just been fiddling in the shed. grabbed a friends battery, and car started. tested alternator, and it gives out 20 volts, and we think it has fried both my batteries. all batteries that i have tried must have been faulty aswell! therefore it seems the problem is that there is no voltage regulator. hopefully problem solved!!
thanks everyone for your ideas.
