    My new/old SIII 109 Adelaide

    Hi,
Just purchased a 1980 SIII stage 1 from interstate, 2 previous owners who seem to have looked after it pretty well. Although for the past year it has been sitting out in a paddock.

Now I am trying desperately to start it up but I am getting nothing, I knew this could be a problem, but I wanted this as a project and learn about mechanics. I am completely new to cars and mechanics, this is my first car. It is petrol not diesel, plans to install LPG.

From the threads I have read so far, this forum is a glorius compendium of knowledge, so I am hoping to hone some skills here.

Looking forward to hearing from the experienced.
    Chris

Does not look too bad. Your best bet in view of your complete lack of knowledge would be to find someone with mechanical if not Landrover knowledge to help at least initially.

If it has been standing for years, it will obviously need a new battery and some new petrol - anything in the tank is perhaps best discarded. Given these, and following a check of oil and coolant, it should start, and if it does not, it will need a series of simple checks for fuel and ignition. There are quite a few areas where problems could exist, but it really needs someone who is a bit knowledgeable to help you get started.

Sorry if this is not too helpful. If you indicate where you are in Adelaide, there may be someone nearby from here.

South Central Adelaide, more so the Mitcham area.
Brother and I just checked the fuses, and the batteries with a multimeter, everything is conducting fine, but when turning the key just dead no response. Uncle in law has been redoing a LR himself, I'll be grabbing him at some point and going through everything. The only problem is he works weeks and I work weekends.

If it has not been started for quite some time, it may be wise to replace oil and filter and wind it over without a coil lead, just to make sure you are getting oil pressure. As John said, do not use any of the fuel that has been sitting in the tank for all this time. Flush tanks, lines and maybe even a new fuel filter.

A few simple things may prevent problems (rubbish in fuel system, no oil pressue, etc.) from doing damage when it does fire up

Just go under the car, check the voltage at the starter motor. Check the starter is working by jumping the battery cable to the starting terminal. Use a screwdriver or a short loop of wire. Watch that you don't short to the starter body or you will see sparks!

    ***NB**** select neutral first!

If the starter is sick, it's time to remove it, dismantle, inspect, and possibly replace it. A Bosch starter from a Discovery will be more reliable. Try Triumph Rover Spares for one.

Thanks guys for the fast responses, it has given me a few things to look into. I'll drain the tanks, flush and refill. In the manuals it states a fuel type of 90 or 92 Octane, is this ULP (RON) of 91 or LRP has 96? Only reason why I ask is that ULP was introduced 5 years after the car was made.

It is best in my experience to run the V8's on Premium Unleaded petrol as everything is better than the lower octane petrol i.e. smoother idle; better economy; more oomph at cruising speeds,

Despite what Chazza says, this engine should run perfectly well on regular unleaded. Unless modified, it is detuned and throttle restricted compared to the same engine used in the Rangerover. Unless modified the compression is not high enough to gain significantly from the higher octane fuel, although ignition timing adjusted for each type will give best results.

The Land Rover handbook agrees with you John; however; thousands of km running two Rover V8's has shown an improvement of at least 3 to 4 m.p.g. on my cars.

Neither engine has been modified, or the tuning altered from the standard recommendations,

    Cheers Charlie
