Inspection light/aux power socket in series 3 dash

Does anyone know what sort of plugs are going to fit the aux power sockets in a series 3 dash, and where they can be obtained? Or is it better to simply fit a different power socket to the car dash like a lighter socket or similar power socket? I'm not looking for huge power drain, just to charge items or run a light etc.

Fit a different plug. The plugs for this socket (fitted from 1948) can be found, but tend to be expensive, and suffer from the critical shortcoming that they are not polarised.

Don't ask me how I know! (It was a good little inverter.)

A further potential problem is that they are unfused (i.e. your wiring harness acts as a fuse)

yes but red and black tend to be pretty easy to identify and while the genuine items are not colour coded the light they were ment to run was double insulated so it didnt matter.

the can be had and they arent that dear from memory, a set of banana plugs suitabley adjusted works quite well as an interum fix.

While they are not fused they do make an exclelent point to plug in solar or other charges so long as you limit the current to about 10 amps.

Could you retrofit a set of test leads from an electrical meter, cut the probes off one end and wire into your appliance maybe? I would just fit an inline fuse behind the dash though.

That was what I was leaning towards as an option if the originals are not easily available. I want to try as much as humanly possible to keep the LR as original as I can (at least in appearance at any rate because I love the way she looks) so I don't particularly want a lighter socket mounted anywhere. I'd be keen to find out what would have originally been in the middle of the dash (in front of the gear lever) - would this have been an amp meter or clock back in the day? Someone has fitted a small tacho there now. It has a Holden 6 so I'm not going for immaculate or 100% original standard, just want to avoid modern mods where I can.

With most Series 3s, nothing, although this would be the location for the optional oil temperature gauge, and probably a clock, although there is not one listed in the optional equipment book.
