Alternative front grilles for series 3

Just wondering if there are any alternatives to the plastic series 3 grille? I had to take mine off today and it is a little worse for wear being 35 years old and plastic.

I want to retain the series look so will a series 2 or 2a grill go on and are they easy to find? Or has anyone custom made anything out of alloy or stainless? Pictures would be helpful.

The woven wire grill from the wide headlamp model SIIa was an option for the SIII when people wanted to fit a chaff mesh.

Unfortunately while they were the standard grill for wide headlamp models in the U.K they were relatively rare in Australia where we usually had a welded wire mesh grill. The Army ones used the woven wire type.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Something about the plastic is just a bit wrong. I would swap the dash for a series 2 one if I could as well - I like the more rugged look. As my S3 was stored for 20 odd years in a farm shed, the grille has suffered a little with a few breaks and old repairs plus the UV hasn't been kind to the painted plastic.

An "all metal" old school car like the series 3 should have had a metal grille (only my opinion of course). It isn't that I particularly dislike the plastic one as such, I just like the look of steel a little more. I've seen a few that are custom made from stainless with the square holes all punched out, but unless you have an engineering workshop at your disposal, this would not be a cheap option.

If I could track down a compatible grille, have it gal coated or powder coated and fit it to mine, it would complete the look I'm hoping to get. Otherwise it might be a case of trying to make something up myself either from stainless sheet or wire mesh, but trying to get an end result that doesn't look too dodgy.

Brian Danielson at Land Vehicle Spares Silverdale had a whole stack of NOS Australian welded wire ones for the wide headlamp SIIa. (Some people call them 6 cyl grills but they were also fitted to 88").
