Sourcing silencer & windscreen for S3 FFR

I'm looking for the best (read cheapest) place to source the following for my S3 FFR :-

Windscreen - I can get it from the local LR aftermarket supplier, has anyone had any luck with any of the windscreen suppliers and if so at what price ? I just want to buy the glass to fit myself.
The previous owner of my FFR replaced both screens but the drivers side cracked (from the edge), he complained and was told it was the heat that had done it ?!

Silencer - I need to replace the silencer on the FFR (6 cyl). I want to fit it to the full length system to pass a roadworthy and then remove it and use it to repair the front mounted system. Again I can source it from the local LR aftermarket supplier ($130 from memory) but has anyone had success with any of the local exhaust companies. Are they still made in the local market or are they all imported from UK suppliers ?

    Thanks,

    Colin

you should be able to get a piece cut and toughened (or a lamainated piece) from your local glaziers to fit your frame (it is after all only a flat piece of glass)...

here in Birmingham, England we had a couple of rear panes cut to a template to fit the rear of a truck cab as an exact reproduction with the hole for the catch (toughened as well) for i think 15-16 pounds each (it was a couple of years ago) ...

go make enquiries or look for any secondhand series windscreen (except air portable and series1 ) and the glass will swap if needs be, new means it will be perfect with no minor scratches so will give better night vision tho (no "starring" from oncoming headlights)

Remember the Army Land Rovers have laminated glass where the civilian ones of the same era were mostly toughened glass. So try for an Army one from a wrecker, otherwise Obrien Glass has at least one depot that cuts laminated automotive glass from flat sheet in most capital cities. The one in Sydney is Minto or one of the suburbs close by.

I picked up replacement front exhaust pipes and OEM silencer from a number of swap meets. I also got a 110 V8 silencer off ebay at a good price. If you cant get the original SIII type perhaps you could get a 110 silencer and tailpipe and have a local muffler place make up the engine pipe.

Is anyone interested in having FFR front exit pipes made up? My NOS ones are still off the vehicle and now would be the time to make patterns.

i'm only guessing but i'm certain exhausts are still made for the series landys, they may be pattern ones but here they are relatively inexpensive (i made my own as it has the 200tdi in it), i'm certain they're under £50 for the 2.25 petrol 88"

i just grabbed 50mm bore scrap exhausts from the local tyre/exhaust places and cut out the usable sections to make mine, gotta make one for my '65 2a 109 next , i've already sorted the manifold flange and the first two kinks/bends to make the initial downpipe

200tdi with 300tdi manifold/turbo, just the flange bolted on i think

Any rural windscreen supplier is set up to supply windscreens cut to pattern for tractors etc (even if it is an arrangement with someone else). Note that if you go this route, the windscreen is required legally to have a marking on it showing that it is approved as meeting standards - the supplier will usually do this as a matter of routine.

My experience looking for glass is that it is very expensive to ship glass round the country, so a local supplier is always best. And you never know - I found a new genuine rear window for my 110 at the Dubbo wreckers!

Silencer - try the landrover suppliers - I know the 2.25 exhaust components are readily available, not sure about the six.

Thanks for all the idea's, looks like I need to visit some of the windscreen suppliers and check out prices.
Not sure about using a secondhand one in Victoria because they used to fail most cars on windscreens a while ago, although I'd heard that they'd relaxed a bit. The theory was that because they would only test a car on change of ownership they made sure the windscreen was changed. I bought a secondhand car in WA a couple of years ago that went 'over the pits' there OK but failed on the windscreen when tested in Victoria.
4 Wheel Drives list laminated screens at $132 per side, I'll check and see if I can get a better price elsewhere.

The silencer is available for $130, again I'll ask around a few exhaust suppliers and see what I can find.

Diana - My original FFR exhaust is OK, just the silencer needs replacing.

Do you have problems registering FFR vehicles with front exhausts in Victoria? If the vehicle is before ADR's and the exhaust is original fitment, it should be permissable. My friends FFR's, FFT's, RAEME Workshops and ACCO's all have front exhausts, with no problems in South Australia. I am thinking of SIIa vehicles though, I will have to check what date the ADR for exhaust came in.

When my 2a FFR was registered in Victoria almost twenty years ago, it needed to have the exhaust converted to normal - it is possible (although unlikely) they have relaxed since then, especially for historic vehicles.

The previous owner of my FFR had to get a full length system fitted to get through a roadworthy. He mentioned that the issue was because it was a 'soft top' and there was a possibility of fumes getting into the passenger compartment.
I think other people have managed to get a roadworthy with the front exit exhaust it just depends on the interpretation of the rules by the tester.

We all know that you can go to the RTA - ask the same question of each person behind the counter and get a different answer from each.

When the front exhaust is re-fitted and I go to get it registered, I'll be telling them that:
    • it is a radio truck designed to be used inside a radio shelter,
    • It has a compliance plate, issued when it was fitted with a front exhaust by JRA,
    • that I'm a licensed ham operator, and military re-inactor.
    • to have a rear exhaust is likely to cause fatal asphyxiation and the inspector will be responsible for those injuries.
    let's see where it leads.
