    G'day Jimbob

That looks like the classic signs of a blocked oil gallery in the crankshaft on that journal just for your own satisfaction I would try to poke a small screwdriver/drill bit up the crank oil hole and see what comes out,my bet would be small bits of bearing, which over time has blocked the oil gallery to the point of starving the bearing of oil lucky that it just rattled and did not seize/grab the shaft check the underside,(cap side) of the bearing and you will see the bearing size stamped on it,STD,010,020, then if you were to repair the motor you have a rough idea as to what next undersize you will have to get it reground to

If you are going down the 200TDI route I would suggest that would be your best option cost wise if you are sure the TDI is good, but you may have to swap the Ser 3 6cylinder bellhousing for a 4 cylinder one,(bolts are in different locations at the top) this should not be hard to source as there should be quite a few dead 4cyl S3 gearboxes around to scrounge a bellhousing from just make sure that the throwout fork is good as it is a known wear problem, same as on the later vehicles,Leyland was of the opinion that it sold spare parts

    cheers

    G'day Jim,
I am just about to pull the gearbox out and investigate why there was a pile of spines sitting in the drain plug this has dashed my hope of getting the new engine in on the weekend but in any case I would probably have been held up waiting for new parts (clutch, pressure plate, bearings etc.)

In the meantime I have been re-reading posts on the net by people who have done it before; the biggest headache will be making the turbo and exhaust miss the chassis; so the swap is not as straightforward as some people make out.

I often think that a 2 1/4 petrol on LPG might be a better way to do things,

    Cheers Charlie

Hi Uncle, I have checked the oil gallery and there is no blockage that i can find. I had to take off another big end cap to see what size it was and they are 010. I am having trouble finding any parts supplier to get the bearings from. Do you know of any where?

    Thanks Jim

No good to hear about thur gearbox mate.

With the 200tdi, i thought from my readings that the defender exhaust manifold would clear the chassis rail, but a discovery timing cover is needed to get the injector pump to clear the series engine mounts. Have you read these write ups??

Converting a Series Land Rover to a 200 tdi engine

Down the bottom is some links to people doing this very conversion.

Yes I have read them - the Defender manifold is as rare as rocking horse doo-doos so I am not holding out much hope in that direction

Nitemare reckons the 300tdi manifold and turbo can be made to fit, so this may be the way to do it but I will worry about the problem when I get to it,

Did I see wear on the big end bearing cap? I looks as if the bearing may have spun. Does the bearing still have two good tangs?

Does any one have just one 010 oversize con rod bearing for these 2.6 sixs?

    G'day Jimbob

You could try FWD Motors in Brisbane or get onto "Master Chief" on this forum site, you will probably be able to PM him by looking up the members list,he and his dad maybe able to help if not, it maybe worth buying a full set of .010 undersize and replacing the lot

    cheers

just jumping back in here to confirm the 300tdi manifold/turbo does fit nicely (use the 300 oilpipes as well), i fitted mine because i've put the 200tdi in a 109 chassis which saves you having to scallop the chassis if fitted with the 200 manifold/turbo (i'm trying to keep it so it can be swapped back without any evidence of the modification should i wish to do so)

a picture of my engine sat in the 109 chassis all bolted up and waiting for me to continue
