Stub axle reuse after bearing spinnning

Thanks Guys, The bearing was absoloutely bone dry. I am not sure what went wrong tbh.

The passenger side was swimming with oil.

The diff oil level was fine too I think.

This is what I was faced with when I pulled off the drivers side hub:

Why would ol be getting to one side and not the other?

I will have a look at the seal face shortly.

I do actually have a totally complete pair of stage 1 diffs so I could borrow one from there if need be.

Is that the seal I see? while it may have been pulled off when you removed the hub, I wonder if it had already dislodged from the hub. This could have allowed water and dirt into the bearing. Certainly the generally rusty look to things suggests water has got in - a blocked breather may have resulted in either the seal being pushed out or water being sucked in, and that seal was the weakest point.

I have only ever seen that happen to grease-lubed hubs. Sure there isn't an oil seal inside the stub axle?

If the diff oil was a bit low and the hub seal was leaking water in I suppose that should do it to.

I often try to drive/park on (slight) side slopes to help oil get out to the hubs.

Yes the seal was left on the stub axle when i removed the hub. It was quite a loose fit. (span freely)

There is definetely no seal (or remains of one that I can see) inside the stub axle.

The strangest thing is that the car has probably only done 600 km in the last 2 years since we bought it in parts and put it back together, and who knows how long it had been apart prior to that.

There is some rusty debris in the axle tube so it doesnt look like any oil has been getting in there atall.

I wonder if this is old damage that lasted the 600km or so, before it failed totally

I will drain the oil after rechecking the level, but it should have been ok as I only changed the pinion seal recently and topped it back up.

In my experience, oil lubed bearings will only fail if they are assembled dry (forgot to grease them) or if they get water in them, or the nut comes loose. The fact that in this case the inner race seems to have been the trouble suggests that it may have been a water ingress problem - it is the first one to get water on it, but also, if assembled dry, oil may have got to the outside bearing in time to save it, at least to some extent. And once there was radial movement on the inner bearing, the seal would not seal, allowing water in.
