Check the amount of interference fit with the new bearing. With that in mind, what is the use of the vehicle?
Short runs, with light duty operations. Caulk it and be happy.
Heavy loads, long distances. Replace it.

Hi All,
We had a wheel bearing failire on the drivers side rear wheel of our stage 1 yesterday. The passenger side was fine, swimming with oil, but the drivers side wasn't!
It looks like the bearing has spun on the stub axle which has picked up slightly. (It took me an hour to remove the remains of the bearing with a fbh and chisel)
Is this reusable do you think with new bearings, or should I be looking for a new one?

Hey CC, that's my thoughts aswell. The use will never be that hard really, so I will get the bearings first and see how they fit, if I'm not happy then I will get a new stub.

I would be more concerned about the sealing surface (not replaceable on these) It does not look as if it would seal terribly well. As a matter of interest, any idea why the bearing failed? Not very common with Series wheel bearings with oil lubrication. Although interestingly I replaced a Series wheelbearing on my trailer yesterday; but I know why that failed - the seal came out of the hub and allowed water in, and they are greased not oil.

On having a close look at the seal running surface,(the shouldered bit) it is showing sighns of wear, I would suggest that you replace it,latest part No I have for the V8 109 is FRC-1996 the axle shaft to diff housing gasket is P/N GFG-103.

When ordering parts state it is for a 109 V8
cheers
Pete if the journal looks okay, you should be able to fit a speedy sleeve onto the seal area, or get it up to me and I could polish out the pitting for you.
Cheers, Mick.

Pete - Doesn't look too bad. As mentioned, the seal surface seems more of an issue.
I would clean it up with some fine sandpaper (on a lathe if you can), and see what it looks like then. If there are some good (/shiny) sections of the seal surface, just use a good quality double-lipped seal and tru and mount it so the lip runs on the good metal (if possible).
Strange as it may sound, have seen the stub axle bearing area repaired by knurling. The bearing is then almost a press-fit the first couple of times!
knurling is fine if to get you out of trouble on a light use vehicle.
have even used a center pop and nail polish to get out of trouble before today.
