they can be a bugger to remove even with the proper flat ended circlip pliers.
You can fiddle around with about 4 thin screw driver or bits of stiff wire to prop the spring ring open around the shaft.
When i broke my circlip pliers once, I ground a chisel point onto an old pushrod, heated it up red hot and quenched it to harden it, and then chiseled the spring ring in half.
