Thread: Gearbox mainshaft spring ring

I think i should investigate as the gear has a bit of play and there is a bearing there. The spring ring is very sloppy and loose as well. ive attacked it with a screwdriver and stretched it quite a bit but still not enough to let go. W

they can be a bugger to remove even with the proper flat ended circlip pliers.
You can fiddle around with about 4 thin screw driver or bits of stiff wire to prop the spring ring open around the shaft.
When i broke my circlip pliers once, I ground a chisel point onto an old pushrod, heated it up red hot and quenched it to harden it, and then chiseled the spring ring in half.

Ill give it another session tomorrow. Ill put the gearbox casing in the oven to help with the bearing retainer removal. How hot should the oven be? W

Of the many boxesI have rebuilt I have never really needed the case to be hotter than around 100 degrees C for fitting/removal of bearings, carriers etc.
