    Front output shaft housing

I was wondering when re-attaching the front output shaft housing do I grease up the rods and springs etc? Or does it get gear oil from the transfer case? W

I always think that it doesn't hurt to put a smear of grease on vulnerable parts if only to stop it rusting before I finally get round to having a running Rover

It will get lubricated from the transfer box as well, that is why there is an oil seal on the front output housing,

Oil moves freely from the transfer case proper into the front output housing, and is spread around by the slinger on the shaft. However, it is good practice to grease any moving parts when assembling any machinery unless the bits are actually submerged in oil before startup, so that they are lubricated from the start. In this case, as the bearings will be actually submerged at least partly, I would not regard it as a serious omission if you did not, but if you exercise the rods before startup, then they will move more freely, and are less likely to scuff the (new) O-rings etc if their working surface is greased. Remember there will be no oil splashed about until the front output is spinning.
