Question identity of our series 3 land rover

Our series 3 land rover (short wheelbase) is a bit of a mystery to us. It started life as a diesel now replaced by 4 cylinder petrol engine (series 3). The car was built in australia and has a plate under the bonnet pointing out this info and on it is printed the number 908 270 75A.Stamped over this is the number 10 79. Does anyone know if this means the car was built in October 1979 and can anyone throw light on the other printed number? The vehicle has all the earmarks of a series 3 but were are still not sure.

The definitive number is the one stamped on the chassis. This is on the outside of the spring hanger at the back of the LH rear spring, that is, the bit the shackle pivots on. This legally defines the vehicle - all the plates rivetted or screwed to the bodywork can easily move from vehicle to vehicle as bits are swapped.

This sounds like the compliance plate. If it is then the 10 79 is the date that the plate was affixed not the build date.

Started life as a diesel, 1972-1979 so definitely a series 3, and as a guess I would say 10/79 is the build date going on what I have found out

Thanks for the help. As a series 3 owner do you know no if the Australian- assembled vehicles had interior dome lights which were smaller and different from UK or USA models Ours is broken and the bezell is smaller than advertised NOS units. It may be a replacement but the vehicle, other than a change to a petrol engine, looks original in all respects. I need to change the lamp and will buy a NOS as advertised, if ours is the wrong one.

I don't know the answer to that question, but it is very likely, as it is the sort of item that could well be bought in from a local supplier. Series Landrovers built in Australia had substantial local content.

A lot of Australian Land Rovers didn't get dome lights at all unless they had deluxe trim. Therefore the dome lamps were often after-market fittings.

A tell tail of having OEM dome lamp is the purple/black? wire under the cover strip in the centre of the windscreen. If the feed wire is in a different place or not purple, then it is likely an aftermarket dome lamp.

Also remember the dome lamps in later Defender models are slightly different to the original S2a/S3 units.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Thanks. I have had a good look under the centre strip of the windscreen and there is a single purple wire which heads up to the roof and under the lining and appears again at the broken dome light. This seems as tkough it may be original. I have not checked where it begins. I will track that down
