    gearbox join to bellhousing

gday All. Any tips on how to get the bellhousing on the gearbox with ease? It dosent want to go easy. Is it best to have the gearbox laying down or vertical?

Theres a juggle and conflict between the layshaft gear and the bellhousing shaft gear. Is 2 people needed? W.

It can be a bit of a fiddle but if you have the gearbox sitting in its normal position you can, by reaching between the bell-housing and the box, line up the layshaft etc. and get it to engage. I recall using the four retaining bolts to gently pull the housing into place, once it had started to line up,

    Cheers Charlie

I usually stand the box on the output shaft end and get a bit of gravity assist.

if worse comes to worse just put your hands on both parts of the casing and utter my secret motivational words (you may need to modify the phraseology to suit)

"If you dont behave and start going together properly I am going to treat you like Fozzy."

For spelling call Rogets, for mechanicing call me.

nooo, you may carry the fubar and have it nearby as a method of intimidation but short of using it to drive bearings out you must never bring it to bear directly against gearbox parts. you may use the rubber mallet but even then go sparingly.

    gearbox hell!

The layshaft wont seat into the rear race. I pulled it apart 20 times and tried to determine whats going on but cant figure why it wont sit properly? It seems to need to go in another 5mm to seat into the bearing race but something is stopping it. Possibly 1st gear? 1st gear is brand new.

the layshaft dosent line up properly with the mainshaft gears by about 5mm+. I can see that at 3rd gear. When assembling the bell housing it wont mate to the gearbox by about 5mm.

Ive removed the layshaft and have assembled the bellhousing to the mainshaft and it mates fine so to rule out the mainshaft as the prob.

This has broken me i think. W.

Update: layshaft fell in the right place. dont know why, but it did. I did nothing different but tried once more before dinner. Whats next......

yes John i can put the bellhousing on in 20 secs flat. Place gearbox upside down on the top studs. I used some grease between the layshaft gear and spacer and outside spacer. Place the gear n spacer on the input shaft gear vertical and meshing, lined up to the bearing. The grease will help it stick.

stick your finger or thumb through the bellhousing layshaft bearing hole from the front , more so to stop the spacer from falling down. But initially you can support the gear as well to stop it from falling off. Trial and error here at first.

Pick bellhousing up, Line up the bellhousing slowly and precisely to line up the shafts and studs and let it go on. if the gear dosent slide on the layshft just slowly jiggle it around while holding the bellhousing in place. By this time you probably will have some support from the studs.

Sounds fiddly cause it is but i had problems today that gave me the practice. The finger in the hole is important otherwise gear and spacer will keep falling out before you can mate the gearbox to b'housing. Thats my method right or wrong. It works well for me. W
