Thread: Engine number location?

I have found a picture in the manual that appears to show the number running vertically immediately above the LH (front) end of the rocker cover for the exhaust valves on the LH side of the block, i.e., at the front end of the exhaust manifold.

John is correct, if I recall correctly.

LH side of the block, in front of and in line with the metal oil filler pipe.

Definately a plate atop the rocker cover as said above must be pretty well covered to not see it cause it's about 3 inches long. I think it's red

My IIA and III both have 2.6's in them and the engine number is located in the same place on the block. See attached photo.

The red plate on the rocker cover is for tappet settings etc.

To everyone who replied, my thanks. Found the number, it was perfectly filled and levelled with oil/ dust. When i cleaned over it originally it didn't remove the crud from the recessed numbers and i missed it. Was looking for a horizontal number too and bigger. Best thing is, the engine and chassis numbers are matching as delivered to the military back in '77

The bad news about that is the engine is almost certainly worn out. And oversized piston rings/pistons are extremely expensive for a 2.6, I was quoted 1.3k for some to be made due to noone stocking the right oversize ( 30 thou). Mechanics in the force seem to have just kept them running not rebuilding etc

Watchout captain_funbeard--it's the crud that's holding your engine together!
