    Tie downs?

    Hello again from Brisbane.

A quick one on the tie down hooks that would normally be just behind the door rear edges on a canopy-fitted model.

My SWB ute never had a canvas canopy at birth and, as such, has no tie down hooks other than the 3 fittings spot fixed along the sides below the galvanised tub cappings - plus those on the rear and tailgate.

I am proposing to fit a 3/4 canopy or canvas tonneau cover and will need to fix an additional set of tie down hooks at the front of the sides for that purpose. Our old Series 1 had these hooks welded on the trianglular plates at the door and I seem to recall that the S2 and S3 models may have had a small galvanised fitting with two hooks that either bolted or were riveted at the appropriate place.

Canvas roofed leafers for scrounging parts seem to be fairly rare nowadays and so I was wondering if these might be found on an old ex-Army model somewhere - realise that there are plenty of plastic and metal alternatives from motor trimmers etc, but was trying to stick to original Land Rover parts where possible.

    Cheers,

    Thanks - received.

The parts I was talking about are shown in the upper half of attached photo.

These, incidentally, were from a US web-based supplier who does not post to Oz.

    Cheers,

I did a check on the L. R. Series - specialists in land rover, land rover series and range rover - gearbox, axle, transmission parts, spares and major units website, and it looks like they have them in stock.. They ship to Australia. Got heaps of stuff from them..

Those are not tie down hooks.

They are there to hold the rope that comes from the front edge of the canvas cover.

Similarly the aluminium tabs are not for tying down either. They are there to hold the canvas sides down.

If you want ties down hooks you need to look at something different. That is, if you are going to have a cover, you could try something like this:

I also made some tie down hooks that I bolt onto the top of the capping rail when the 3/4 canvas is not on.

    Hello again,

Yes, you are right - the original thread was talking about the 'tie-off' hooks for a tonneau cover or 3/4 canopy rather than 'tie-downs' per se.

For the latter purposes I use a South African rig that will hold the proverbial elephant.

    Cheers,
