    S3 Id - what's my birthday?

    Hello from Brisbane.

I originally bought my SWB S3 ute unregistered over eBay without papers and was told it is a January 74 model by the vendor, and so it may well be.

However, I would like to confirm the actual date for future parts purchases and eventual registration etc.

The following data is on the vehicle:

Chassis left rear spring mount - 90313946A

Cabin firewall plate (Leyland Sydney): Body:918564, Serial No: 8818564

Compliance plate (top of radiator bulkhead): 88 Land Rover 3/ 90313946A, 9/75 GVW 4453 LBS Seating capacity 3.

Not sure where the engine number is located on the 2.25 petrol motor - I understood it is somewhere on the block lower LHS, but could not see it from above - will get under it with a torch later and have a girl's look. It may or may not be the original motor, but in all likelihood it is.

Anyway, the chassis number and compliance plate numbers are the same which is encouraging.

Can anyone tell me the official year model for this vehicle - 1974 or 1975?

Where is the engine number located on the 2.25 petrol motors?

    Cheers,

    Hi

The Engine number is on the LHS - at the top of the block.

Just below and in front of the exhaust manifold.

In the first pic you can just see it to the left underneath that far left exhaust manifold bolt.

The second picture shows you what sort of thing to expect.

It's on your compliance plate, September 1975.

The Leyland Sydney plates are only the body assembly numbers, they have nothing to do with the VIN/Chassis number or the identity of the vehicle.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Hello again from Brisbane.

Thanks for helping me out there - I knew it was somewhere on the left hand side of the block, but was looking further down towards the sump edge. My workshop manual oddly enough did not have that detail in it.

    Hello again from Brisbane.

Thanks for that advice - I had actually pretty much come to that conclusion in my mind when I first read the compliance plate, but was not totally sure.

As I mentioned in the original post, the truck was advertised as a January 1974 model which I had generally assumed it was (an uncle bought a new one of similar colour etc back in 1974). It was delivered here one day while I was interstate and then I was off overseas for a few weeks, so it just sat out on the street without much of a look over until this Xmas break when I started chasing up some spare parts that might have needed a more accurate aging.

However, I was fiddling with the radiator cap this morning and happened to read the compliance plate and noticed that it had '9/75' on it. This suggested that it should be listed as a September 1975 vehicle. Hence the inquiry.

    For completeness

    Hello again from Brisbane.

Took a look in the right place and the engine number is 25211978F, chassis is as before - 9013946A.

Would be interested to know when and where it went after leaving the Sydney plant - I understand (vaguely) that it probably spent a good bit of its' life on a farm in the northern plains of NSW.

    Cheers,
