    Beating and welding aluminium - help needed.

    Hello from Brisbane,

    I realise that there is a fair bit of info available on heating and beating aluminium panels, and patching unwanted holes by welding them etc.

    However, in this case my query is not so much "how to do it", rather than "where to get it done" around Brisbane or SEQ?

    I simply don't have the skill or gear to do it up here.

    I have an old roof panel that has a few small bends/dents in it that needs straightening out before it is repainted. They are not too far out of alignment, but I would think that they need to be heated before straightening rather than cold bending.

    It also has half a dozen attachment holes that have expanded beyond their original size that would ideally be filled and redrilled rather than masked up with oversized bolts and washers.

    The photos below give an idea of what has to be filled:





    Can anyone recommend someone who might be able to do that for me please?

    G'day mate, I have a few of the same sort of holes in my series 3. I've been thinking about getting some Alumaloy Aluminium welding rods and patching it myself with a Mapgas blow torch. To be honest I've never tried it but silver soldering copper is very easy to do, I believe it's a similar method. $12 for the Alumaloy on ebay and around $100 for a torch (good for starting camp fires too) May be worth a try?

    Hi LWB123,

    I am also in Bribane and have started an SIII resto, with plenty of holes and dents to fix. I will keep my eyes and ears tuned for any leads and post them up.

    There are plenty about.
    Here is an example: Kennedy Welding (Coorparoo,QLD)

    Also, try looking in 'Yellow Pages - Brisbane'

    I was told a good method is to use sliced up strips of old panels as electrodes for tig as the alloy is not the typical stuff found in workshops.

    I was going to have a dab at this next month on some bits and pieces we got laying around.

    I know the local Landie guy up here uses an oxy flame and alloy stick (I should really get some piccies and more details next trip).
