Significance of body number on plate in cab

Just out of curiousity, what is the logic behind the numbering on the small silver id plate with the body and serial number on it?

    http://www.remlr.com/photos/pics4/plate_pmc.jpg

Most I've seen, as per the one pictured in the above link, have a seemingly random body number, or one that corresponds to the serial number, yet the one I have lists the body number as simply "L 109". Did they change to just reflect the body length or is this the 109th body in the run?

This is the ID plate fitted by the Australian assemblers (Pressed Metal Corporation), presumably to identify the body before it is assembled (throughout Series and 110 production a varying proportion of the vehicle was locally made). As far as I am aware this number has no use to the current owner, as most production records seem to be missing, and what records exist also contain the chassis number.
