    Toro Overdrive Q's

G'day all, well I've scored a toro for willy! The teeth on the, is it an input sleeve? Looked about 40% gone.. But it all turned fine so i put it in (only took me one beers worth to get it in!!) went for a drive an it worked fine. Very impressed actually got willy to 110kph very easily. The few things I'm wondering are if the teeth on the sleeve strip off will I lose drive even with the overdrive disengaged? A worry I have as it seems pretty worn. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to what I can do about fixing it up? I looked into having a new input sleeve made ($680!!!!) the shaft is worn too so I'd need that made a well..or wondered if I could have a new shaft made but with a spline that would match the finer fairey sleeve and then just buy a fairy sleeve which were 50 odd GBP??? Any thoughts would be great!

    Thanks, Andy

If the splines on either the sleeve or input shaft wear off you will lose all drive, so carry your original gear and PTO cover plate at all times. If you can get the splines on the input shaft rebuilt, then get it done to Fairey pattern.
I don't know if they are still in business but GDM precision engineering in Bayswater rebuilt splines and broken gear teeth etc. They were always painfully slow at doing anything though.

I have often thought about fitting a tapered roller bearing to the front of the mainshaft of the gearbox ala LT77/r380 and welding the overdrive clutch sleeve and input shaft together into a one piece unit.

Yes, Fairey parts, not Toro, hence the suggestion for converting to Fairey type drive.

Worth noting that the USA price for parts is probably cheaper than UK (Rovers Down South actually have the rights and tooling to the Fairey overdrive), but check prices taking into account latest exchange rates etc - bit volatile at present!

    Hi Steve,

I can only see Roverdrive on there, nothing to do with Toro?

I have a Toro as well Andwoo, but haven't put it on yet. I have to make/get some linkages and fix a broken plug/dipstick. There is a thread in the technical chatter about it. It sounds like your is complete though, good find!

Cheers wagoo, I've tucked all the left overs away in the toolbox. I'm going to pull it out again soon to check over it. It goes pretty good sam, didn't come with the shifter though. I've been using a big yellow screwdriver to get it into gear and a small one to pop it out. Not ideal but just wanted to test it all, heading off to mildura for easter and want to have it all working perfectly!
I'm in two minds atm. but i think I'm leaning toward buying a fairey sleeve and having the shaft machined or replaced to suit. I'd rather have new toro parts made but would be a costly exercise. I'll keep searching and getting prices, I'll keep you posted Inciser I'll be getting something made to make the Toro like new!

So no one keen on my earlier suggestion of welding the clutch sleeve and input shaft together, and fitting a tapered roller to front of mainshaft?
Never have to buy clutch sleeves/input shafts, or worry about worn splines again.
I don't actually have an overdrive, but i do use a Fairey clutch sleeve and shortened input shaft on my underdrive that will be getting the treatment once the splines get a bit thin.If I still had a series gearbox fitted, the modification would have been done already, but my big, heavy Warner T98 box which has remained totally trouble free fror the past 15 years doesn't require any attention yet, but when it does I'll do the tapered roller mod to the mainshaft.
    Bill.
