    Wiper motor

    Hello again from Brisbane.

Another general admission of naivety on the technical side of Land Rover ownership if you will.

Stopped by a local parts supplier yesterday and the conversation drifted off the immediately cogent topic of 11" brakes, and the receptionists' sunny nature, on to replacement wiper motors.

It seems that the wiper motors for Series 3 and Defenders are essentially identical - fitwise anyway. Costwise the comparison seems to end quickly because the quoted price for a new Defender motor is around $180, whereas a new Series 3 motor is on offer for around $90 at the usual LROC/AULRO price.

My question is, are they actually the same or different units and likely to offer similar or dissimilar performance, or is that essentially determined back up at the switch on the dash?

    Cheers,

Early Series 3 were single speed, later ones two, Defender is two speed plus variable on later ones, but I think the variable is at the switch, or at least not at the motor. You may be looking at the difference between single and two speed, although there may also be differences in fittings - to tell the truth, I have never even looked at a Defender motor!

The reason may be as JDNSW suggests. Single speed wiper motors have a squarish body whereas the later (2-speed) type are round.

They have a different stroke length, so you need to change the wiper spindles/drive gears over if you change wiper motors.

I fitted a late series 3 2-speed motor to my IIA.

Some of those motors have adjustable strokes, but I don't know about the Landrover ones. (Never had any need to pull one apart - they seem to be very reliable, which is more than you can say for the switches!)

I just used the correct spindles - I couldn't see a way to adjust the stroke.

I used a standard toggle switch in my IIA, both for the reason you mention and because I didn't have a 2-speed switch. I don't have the self parking, however it is easy to switch off the wipers at the right point.

Are the spindles a direct swap for the IIA ones? I have a defender motor here I've been thinking of dropping in my IIA....

It was a long time ago but I recall that they are. You need to swap the spindle housing over as well though, as the original housings are too small.

The old square motors were fitted from the start of negative earth (67) to around the end of 68, when a single speed round type was fitted. The wiper switch between the two types changed from earth swithcing to power switching at the same time, along with the method of mounting the motor to the bulkhead. Sometime between 69 and 71 the brushbox inside the motor was revised from metal frame to plastic plate. This motor then carried on through Series 3 and into Defenders. Late in the seventies an extra brush was added onto that plate to create the faster second speed. Outwardly, the single speed motor has only two wires running from the park switch into the motor, whereas the two-speed units have three.

I fitted two speed wipers to my 88", but I didn't like the ideas of losing the self-park or using a Series 3 rotary switch, so I modified a Lucas headlight switch. It took a bit of thinking out, but haven't had any problems with it. Very handy in the monsoon though!!
