Hello again from Brisbane.
I am thinking up getting new handles and locks for my 1975 S3 - mainly for cosmetic reasons, as the rubber on the handles is split. These have the lock barrel accessed from outside through the door panel itself with a small round black plastic surround rather than down near the handle like some earlier models and S2s.
The mail order parts outlet that I have been enquiring through can supply new "S3 handle sets and locks" for both RHS and LHS at a reasonable price, but they are not keyed alike. They reckon that the new barrels can be simply removed by undoing a screw and the old ones then re-used to give a single key.
My understanding (poor) is that the S3 lock barrels can't actually be removed and that faulty ones can only be repaired by replacing the whole door handle and lock set.
Is that correct?
Alternatively, can the handles be replaced without throwing away the whole handle and lock sets?
Cheers,

Thought about using Tool Dip on the handles? The stuff that you dip your tool handle in to give it a nice rubber grip. I haven't tried it...
You can remove and replace the barrel as long as you have the key. From memory ther is a pin near the base of the bit the barrel fits into that you press in with a suitable spike, and then just pull the barrel out by turning the key and pulling.

On mine - put the key in the lock. Go to the other side of the lock - remove the fixings (either a simple screw or a pin through the striker). The lock will slide out.
Nope, I don't think so - the locks can certainly be removed on all the ones I have.
The handles are an integral part of the mechanism. If you have spares (and I have never seen spare handles) then you could replace them - but you would have to open the mechanism - which poses potential problems when reassembling.
So where abouts was this from and what price were the locks?
Hello again.
The locks I was looking at are ex-DLS Derbyshire and ~$31 + $8 shipping apiece. I am still seeking confirmation that they are the correct unit for my particular truck (1975) because they are listed as Series 2/3 and I know the lock set up in my S3 truck is not the same as on our old 1972 S2A.
My UK-sourced repair manual suggests that S3 locks can't be dismantled, but that might be referring only to the handle mechanism rather than the lock itself. It may also be unique to the later burst proof models perhaps?
The door keys were missing when I bought the truck and I took the whole handle/lock unit to a locksmith to get new keys cut. At the time I didn't recall seeing any easy way to get the barrel out - e.g. nuts, pins, circlips etc which was consistent with the suggestion that they were not easily repairable.
Cheers,
you can also use liquid electrical tape, its the same stuff as tool dip, just a little thinner.
