yep, the 2(a) box with the spur gears and no syncro loves to stay in first, theres no axial thrust generated by sliding mesh square cut spur gears....
noisey as hell tho and the smaller bearing on the nose of the layshaft doesnt like abuse much.
Hi guys came back from easter trip these are my problems:
Gearbox jumps out of first gear and wont engage second gear now????
Jamed selector fork or 1st/second synchro hub?
Are series 2a gearboxes more stronger than series three gearboxes? I would like to have a series two gearbox with series three one piece layshaft. is that possible? is that the ultimate series land rover gearbox? I dont mind non synchro gearbox as long as its strong enough to handle alpine country with 2.6 landy engine infront of it.
Also another question are non synchro gearboxes less prone to jumping out of first and second gear due to spur cut design? Honestly i would go from series three to series two gearbox if it guaranteed that the damn gearbox would hold first gear on overun down a hill!
cheers matt.

Hi Matt
After you get your gearbox sorted, run a straight 50 grade oil in the gearbox only and whilst EP90 diff oil is ok for the transfer box.
