VIN number
Hello Listers
I want to register a 1976 S3 stationwagon (3 door), but 'my man' can`t find the VIN number on the chassis. He says that it is supposed to be stamped on the chassis in either the left or righ wheel arch, but on mine he can`t find any number. The VIN in stamped on the plate in the engine bay, though. I don`t know if the car in ex-military, as it seems to be a bit higher off the ground than ythe standard.
Any idea where to look for the VIN on the car?
Erik.

Try the left hand rear spring hanger for starters. What is the number stamped on the plate. That will tell you if it is ex-mil or not.

The chassis number number on Australian constructed SIII is stamped on the LHS rear spring shackle bracket, usually on the flat face under the chassis above the shackle plate. If you can't see it after rubbing back with a wire brush, try rubbing lightly across the area with a points file.
If the vehicle is a UK assembled vehicle, then the chassis number number is on the RHS front spring hanger. Usually on the flat area about two inches above the bolt.
When you say 3 door, station wagon, are you talking about an 88" wheelbase Staton Wagon? Otherwise the 3 door 109" are just "panel van" or "panel van with windows" even though they may have had the full length rear door or "Deluxe Trim". There were some Australian assembled 109 where the original owner specified the "1 Ton" chassis, which makes them civilian but the same chassis and suspension spec as the military SIII.
Hope this helps!
Diana
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
