    Series power steering

Driving my old mans tractor the other day I couldn't help but notice the power steering was just a ram system along the front axle. Could a similar hydraulic system be mounted to the steering arm on a series vehicle to avoid messing with the steering column? Or maybe like a boat motor... I could be wildly inexperienced on this.

Yes, a crowd by the name of Heystee Automotive (In the US I guess) have them. Good luck on getting any reply regarding the shipping to AUS though.

Yes, I had one on my Series 2 109 in the early 80's the ram and pump was off a Fairlane, Im pretty sure the Brougham had the same set up. I was one of the best and easiest mods, it basically replaced the steering damper.

Theres one on ebay now if you get in quick, but the whole shebang cost me about $80 from Fussel Road, They must be like hens teeth now.

This set up is called Power assist , you still use all the existing mechanical linkages, but the ram basically goes in place of the Landy steering damper. Inputs from the steering wheel push a valve on the side of the ram .

Many tractors have full hydraulic steering - e.g. no mechanical connection between the wheel and the steering wheel.

AFAIK this is not legal for (normal, non speed-limited) road vehicles, because if the hydraulics fail at speed it would be bad...

Yes but this one on eBay is the best part of $1,000 delivered.

    I'll wait.

BTW: Heystee is in The Netherlands.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Tell them they are dreaming,

For that sort of money the Heystee one would be the go, but E1300 / AU$1600 plus shipping, no thanks

You can buy just the front end kit for 835.00 and use a land rover power steering pump, I thought about using this kit when I do my 300tdi conversion as the motor has the pump etc in place.

It's probably a cheaper option to fit this, rather than do a conversion like banjo has done

I am not sure what this system has come out of but the conversion looks very smart and looks like it will fit up to the Series linkages. This image is of a vehicle owned by Timm Cooper who builds some very serious looking Land Rovers. It could very well be his own design. You can find a range of his brake kits, not sure about the power steering kits at Roam Offroad. Could be a place to start though if you want something like this.

    ROAM OFFROAD

The other site I think is exceptional for information about modifications to Series Landrovers is Expedition Land Rover. Lots of images and how to do as well as reviews of different types of modifications.

Converting a series Land Rover to power steering

    Hope that helps.

    Regards Warrick.

That looks like the toyota (60 series) PAS ox conversion. Banjo on here has done a couple. IMHO it is probably the best option.
