rebore to first second or 3rd oversize, new pistons/ring sets + a crank grind should cost less than $2k all up and as for the syncro learn to push the left pedal twice.
All,
I heard back from George at land vehicle spares today that the reason why the engine on my 76 Game seemed to be down on power was because it was pretty stuffed. The rings are gone, it's running on 31% power and the engine is going to have to come out. The gearbox also needs looking at with some syncro issues so it could be up to 7k to get the whole lot back to perfect condition. This is my daily driver and I have till the end of the year to get it sorted before posting. I am looking at cost effective options to move forward, I don't need it to be original as my series 2 is for that. My immediate thoughts went to shipping a new engine from o/s, a good second hand one locally or maybe a conversion.
Thoughts?

i would source a 2nd engine and a gearbox recond. should not be to much maybe
I was looking through some old magazines in the shed on the weekend and came across the one posted below from a 1977 4WD vehicle test. The Game didn't rate to well but the magazine seemed to think that the Holden Overlander conversion was the ducks nuts. Not sure about that finding however.
Anyway it is amazing that to repair the motor and gearbox in your Game it will cost almost as much now than the total purchase price of the vehicle when it was new. I was at my local service centre last week and there was a Game in there that also needed a new motor. The motor in the vehicle was a Santanta I believe. I don't think that was the original spec motor however. It was going to be an expensive repair bill though, somewhere around the quote you have been given. I think I would look at trying to find a TDi and having a go at the mods needed to fit it with a suitable gearbox, maybe a 5 speed if it can work out. The TDi conversion into Series Land Rovers is very popular in the UK and there are a lot of cheap Disco's out there for sale to be wrecked.
There are many examples on the Leafsprung Land Rover Forum with detailed threads and images. Good luck as I have always liked the Game and it would be nice to keep as many as possible of them on the road.
Regards Warrick.

If you get the existing motor completely reconditioned and you strip and assemble it yourself it will probably cost about $2000 - 2500.
If you mess about with second-hand engines you will need to: hear and see it running to get any sort of idea how good it is; factor in freight costs; probably spend money on it anyway to fix oil leaks; service the ignition, etc. and cross your fingers that after it has been installed it is actually better than the one you took out.
Games seem to be rare enough to be worth spending some money on,
Cheers Charlie
