or just put in the disco stuff then get rims with an offset that pulls it back in or fit flares.
I'm sure this has been discussed and is indeed possible, but what I want to ask is given series diffs are narrower can defender/disco diffs be chopped and shortened to look the part and keep the disc brakes/ratios etc. I imagine the spline ends would need to be long enough to shorten. This seems like a good way to get disc brakes and good diffs (to match a Holden 6 or 200/300tdi)
Cheers Jim

This is what RRC axles look like grafted into a lightweight SIII -
Bear in mind that the lightweight is a couple of inches narrower than the standard SIII. So, instead of mucking around with cutting axles, it's easier to do as Mr BK suggested: Fit flares ( your's won't need to be as wide as those) or adjust some rims. The hardest part will be the brakes - you'll need to graft the donor master cylinder so they operate the same - and that means doing custom pipework too.
Post up some pics if you go ahead with the project.
cheers guys, liking the ideas, BUT if I did want the axles to line up and look right for a Series could I chop them? If its to hard then I'll go down the rim and flare option.
cheers
Indirectly regarding chop:
Street racers have been chopping 9 inch diffs for a while - and since Disco axles are straight ( splined only - not reduced shank) it's not beyond the realms of possibility that you can get them cut them down. However, machining costs may outweigh the advanges. ( re spline ends, re weld tubes)
Measure up a Disco and compare widths. It's not that much difference.
Also have a look at Nissan Patrol, Toyota Hilux or LC axles, they're generally stronger and the old Jap solid axles were actually quite narrow.
1.42m track for the Hilux
1.41m for the Patrol 160
In comparison, the Defender is around 1.486 hub to hub.
