Check starter before installing using jumper leads - but with the starter well secured. This will tell whether it is a wiring or starter problem.
With wiring, check whether the battery is earthed to the body/chassis rather than the engine, and if it is, how good is the earth strap between the engine and the chassis - there will be a lot of resistance if you are relying on the speedo cable (been there!).
With the starter, the most common reason for slow turning is that the poles are touching the armature due to worn bushes. (poling)
Either poling or low voltage getting to the starter will result in the starter overheating.
