Thanks folks for the suggestions. I have contacted rovers parts near ballarat and have ordered a new spring plus some new hoses I needed. Will see if that does the trick.

Really appreciate the help - very new to the 'fixing' up bit with an old landrover and as a mechanic I would make a good gardner, so advice like this is gold

    Cheers, Jonathan

Is the retaining cap at the end held in place with a circlip (some are bolted)? If so you need to compress the new spring to install the clip.
I have a compressor somewhere I can take a photo of if you need details.

Freight of a starter motor from the UK would add quite a bit to the cost.

A photo of the compressor would be good - it is a circlip rather than a bolt.

I've had this a few years but it was a commercially available compressor back in the UK.

There's a recess on the inside of each plate that fits snugly over the washer/spring so that it can't slip off.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

Guys- it turned out it was the main spring on the starter...after much mucking around got the starter back in with new spring and she fired up...really stoked with first mechanical repair !! Am now moving on to brakes which need a lot of pumping and a leaking water pump !!

Thanks for the advice on this
