    Old Car New Owner

    Hi
Picked this S3 109 ute up on Saturday, some may have seen it on fleabay recently.
I bought it sight un-seen exept for the pic's the seller posted, yes I know a big no no. But it was cheap and in what looks like resonable condition, better than alot of s3's on ebay for similar price.

Anyway the description read "Series 3 76' 109 ute with ford 250 engine". Turns out to be a 73' year which is fine by me, as it makes the both of us roughly the same age .

After a good look at the engine it actually looks like a 200ci ford engine, I would have loved to see a 2v head on it but will settle for a 200ci Super Pursuit.
Has anyone seen this conversion before?

A couple of other things look a little different to some of the more stock s3's posted on the forum like this

Is this the OEM brake servo?

Everything else looks stock, the gear box and transfer etc. but the clutch has a loud squeal when you hold the clutch in, I suspect a buggered thrust bearing.
The only other odd thing is the flywheel is exposed on the underside of the engine, sort of like there is ment to be a cover plate on there?

It looks as though it's been sitting in long grass for a while as there is surface rust everywhere on the axles, the door tops are rubbish as well as the tray.
At some stage the battery box/holder has been moved under the tray behind the driver.

Looks ok but I'd love to know what you think of the Ford 250 motor in it. How does it go in a Landie? As long as the chassis is reasonably solid and its in good shape it should serve you for a long time if maintained properly of course.

Hey GT, Ok is the best way to describe it at the moment.
It was adverised as a 250 but is actually pre-250 if memory serves these engine were sold in the XY falcons around the 76' era.

Since the clutch is rough I've only driven it around my paddock, it seems to go quite well but a reasonably flat paddock isn't to challenging.

Well you won't have any problems finding parts and it'll have a fair amount of grunt compared to the original 2.25 or 2.6. It certainly looks like a pre cross flow because the exhaust and carbie are on the same side. keep us posted on your progress with your new Landie.

No, that doesn't look like the original. The series 3s had a plastic reservoir on the dual circuit systems so the master cylinder is not Landrover and the booster doesn't look right either, too big. Might work better than standard though .

Thanks Tim, I didn't think it was.
There has been some light panel beating to make it fit under the outer wing.
There seems to be alot missing from under the bonnet and what is there isn't OEM.
I guess I'll cross that bridge when I strip it and start with a clean engine bay.

Booster could be early Holden. Reservoir was used on heaps of things, including Kingswoods, Toranas, etc.

Would you be able to check to see how it is mounted to the pedal assembly? I need a booster and reservoir at the moment for mine, and this could give me options if I can't get an original one.

I would say HQ booster and mc looks like my old one, as for the engine I had a 250 in one of my series 3 and they just had too much torque for the series g/box but it was alot of fun

MC was certainly used on the HQ, and you could be right about the booster being off an early HQ - with drums all around - I can't remember seeing one, but the disk brake model - then everything else right throiugh to HZ had a larger flatter booster.

Yer I had a HQ Belmont Panel Van 3 on tha tree drums all round

I think they used the same booster as the HT,HK etc models until they developed the disc front end
