Spanish Olive paint code

Yes, I know, it's best to take a sample and get it mixed.

I'd noticed some discussion on another thread but no paint code.

I tried a local paint supplier and they refused to mix without a sample, they wouldn't even look up the code. I guess they've mixed it up before and then the customer wants his money back because it 'isn't right'.
I was trying to get Autobarn to mix some in a rattle can but they are having difficulty tracking down the code. Plus their machine was broken but I'm supplying parts to fix that in the morning (you never know where you'll come across a sales opportunity).

Does anyone know who the original paint supplier would have been back in the '70s ?

It would be handy to just have a rattle can for a few small jobs then I'll buy paint, thinners etc. to spray most of the vehicle.

Also is there a code for the white for the roof & wheels ??

Hey Colin, The old paint supplier well atleast for most of it was Dulon, i had luck finding the game paint mix (Yellow Devil) at an ISP store, they had some old books that had the respective Dulon paint codes in it, so they may be able to find the code for you.

Autobarn have an old guy in Sydney that is trying to track down the code for me. Otherwise I'll buy in bulk and set up a small gun for the little jobs (it just uses a lot of thinners to clean up afterwards).

    G'day Colin,

I have been led to believe that my shorty is Spanish Olive but have never actually found that name on a Land Rover paint chart. I have gone down the road of having paint matched from an unexposed panel and I have mixed feelings about the result. The test patch in the paint shop looked very close to the supplied panel so I ordered the paint. When applied to a larger area and in different light, I'm not as thrilled as when I saw the test patch.

This is probably the best example I have of the difference but the photos are taken in different light.

With some more searching I came across the BS-381C colour chart and the colour number 278, called light olive, appears (on my computer monitor) to be the closest match I've seen. I rang the paint shop and they had the code but could only mix it in 2 pack or acrylic. I'm using enamel and the guy said he could make up 50mls in acrylic and tint it across to enamel but I would end up with the same colour that I already have anyway.

You may have some luck with this info if they can mix a bit for you to try.

    Regards

    Marty.

Here is the inside of the bulkhead of mine (motor is a C240 Isuzu).

The outside has been painted & rubbed back down in the past so it doesn't really show the colour that well.

I really want to find the code and get a small quantity made up because most, if not all, the outside will be repainted and I want it to match the inside.
Seems like I need to find someone with a 70's colour chart who is willing to try & look for me. Autobarn felt their guy in Sydney could help but we'll see what happens.

The previous owner supplied paint with the vehicle but he'd had to take it back & get it re-tinted......With that in mind I'm nervous of using it plus it's been sitting around for a few years.

I just received a reply from a request sent to PPG.
I now have a paint code & formulation for Protec 706 but this doesn't look like a DIY option.

Code is 40074, whether this can be made up in acrylic or enamel I'll have to find out.

Just spoke to someone I work with and he has some paint at home. His wife had a Rover car some years ago that was Spanish Olive.....

I got a rattle can of Spanish Olive made up by Autobarn yesterday.
Hopefully this might help someone get a match in the future.

The formulation was as follows :-

    Code 15417 volume 1 litre
Tinter Description Weight
    NM04 Bright Gold 503.28
    NM31 White 417.7
    NM01 Black Tinter 122.25
    NM15 Green 32.6
The job sheet does not mention a base colour or the weight units and they used 1/10 of the amount to make up the spray can.
I'm sure a paint specialist would know if you gave them the above data.

It's a good match to the original paint.
