Thank you Mr Lucas you pr*ck

OK, I have had an ongoing hate for Landy brake light switches for years now, they always fail even some I have got new! so today when it went all dark in the brake lights again I lost my cool and in a fit of desperation I pulled the thing apart, yeah I know sealed from the factory and all that jazz but not today, I use to think it was the spade terminals that was at fault however solder never works on them so I prized the brass lip away from the plastic top and presto fault was then plane to see.
when you push on the brake peddle you raise a small rod with a washer at it's head inside the switch unit, this washer then bridges the gap between the Two power posts that come in from the top of the switch unit.
This is the place of woe that Prince Lucas has bestowed on us mortals! one of the posts had arced a hole into the washer! thus making the gap to far to jump ergo no brake lights.
Fix is to clean up burnt surfaces of both post and washer smear with vasiline grease place plastic top back into brass body and re-fold rim to hold in place (this is also a fault spot as if this is loose you will end up with a bad contact again).
Now screw back in the top of the brake box all the way so you end up with the lights on all the time, now unplug again and back off a few turns until the lights just go off, now when you push the brakes again you will have lights, take foot off and no lights. Your done. hope this helps some of you guys in the never ending War against the Prince of darkness.

gday sgt joe, i had a problem in 95 with my light switch in my 78 2 door rangie. the switch was giving me trouble, so i bought a brand new lucas item from cosford auto services at burleigh. i placed the new switch in position and hooked it up. ($150)., a week later i purchased a set of hell ralleye 2000 pencil beam spot lights. (auto sparky did this). 2 weeks later, lights wouldn't work again.... i pulled the new with apart and hey presto, the 3 contacts had melted (recessed back into the plastic) from over heating. luckily don gave me a new one for free(good man) then hooked up spot lights up on separate toggle switch. ah the joys of lucas!!!!!

I'm with ya Magsy, my headlight high beam don't work either for the same reason you just described, pin melted back into plastic on the Stage one, same also happened on my Range rover, I fixed that by removing the Three way stem and retro-fitting a fused pull out switch from Autobahn.

Wire a relay into the circuit so the switch is not dealing with the full draw!
Good way of protecting old/delicate switches.

Circuit breaker is a better idea for headlights!
Things get a bit dark if a fuse blows.

    Cheers, Mick.
