Thread: HELP! Series III Petrol killing me

Do you have anything hanging off the ignition key that could cause it to move and jiggle in the switch, can you check you always have ignition to the coil? Carefully remove the fuses in the fuse block and clean them (if not already done) - may be in that area also.

Have to determine if it is a fuel or electrical problem.

Right will check fuses but stalls out with ign lights showing...not the fuel filter as replaced.

Someone with more experience with the Zenith carburettor may be able to help with that side of it. As the previous owner had worked on the carburettor that is a possibility that cannot now be ruled out.

Some other areas:

Unlikely it is your fuel pump twice.
Could be an air leak into the fuel line (rather than fuel vaporisation when hot but an air leak makes it worse).
Air leak into the manifold - does it have any anti-pollution rubbish on the engine that could be failing once it's hot?
Could be the float sticking, the bowl empties but nothing can get in or as mentioned in a previous post about the inlet needle valve.

I had a bloke with an old Hiace who fitted an inline plastic bodied filter before his fuel pump. When doing up the gruesome sized hose clamp he crushed the inlet pipe to the filter causing an air leak. I removed said filter and left the one after the pump. Pre-pump filters are a nuisance, only a fine mesh screen should be on the pickup in the tank.
Also I hate plastic bodies filters. Get a metal bodied (e.g. Ryco Z200) EFI filter and fit that instead.

Carb clean. Nice metal jets. Fuses all good. Completely baffled.

Happy to change from plastic once it is going but the new filter is not the issue.

Do you have access to an inline electric fuel pump (facet, repco or similar) that you can put in a rubber section of the fuel line from the tank and try that? (Always carry one just in case mechanical pump fails). Need to earth it though. One will provide enough petrol for a much bigger engine than the 4 cyl. Might be the valves in your mech. pump, but unlikely.
