    Help wanted with power steering

Hi guys, now before I start, yes I've read plenty of threads on the issue of power steering in series landys.
My problem is, my local wreckers is about to have an open day, $55 entry which covers all parts as long as you can carry them out in one go. So with this in mind I'm going to try and buy all the parts I need to add PS to my 88.

Now for the hard part, which way would you guys reckon be the easiest?
Currently they only have one rangie and two discos, multiple landcruisers and patrols.

Any ideas would be very helpful :-)

Converting a series Land Rover to power steering

I'm hoping to use a defender set up on mine

Banjo (on this forum) did a good right-up on his conversion. should be an easy find. I think he used a tojo steering box.

My 2a LWB had very heavy steering once, I changed both swivels and set them up correctly with new bearings and top bushes and it is very easy to turn .
Do you really need power steering ?

You need a PAS box that sits on the outside of the chassis and has the lever at the bottom (pitman arm) pointing forward.

These are on P38a Range Rovers, and some Toyota Land Cruisers and Nissan Patrols. Don't get it if it has the lever pointing to the rear.

    You should also get:
    1. The PAS pump on the engine with the hoses to the PAS box*
    2. the shaft running from the bottom of the steering column to the input flange of the PAS box with the uni joint mechanisms.
    3. Any removable flange on the bottom of the steering column.
    4. The fluid reservior and bracket.
    5. Try to get any brackets and the idler pulley assembly. These may useful adapting to your engine.

    * If you have a Holden engine, try to find the PAS pump, double pulley, idler assembly and brackets off any Holden Red/Blue/Black or Starfire engine.
Also get the hoses or the ends of the hoses exiting the PAS pump, these can be used for the ends of your hybrid hoses to the PAS box.

N.B. Disco and Rangie classic boxes require too much modificaton of the front cross member to be usefull.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Well I had a quick look today, most pas boxes appeared stuffed except one, the rangie. It's still complete, minus only wheels, drivers seat and bonnet........ Hmmmm....... I wonder if I carry a V8 on my shoulder lol
As it's complete I might attack it for parts, any helpfully hints removing what I need including removing the steering wheel to get to the column?

I've gone for a Defender 4 bolt power steering box, but have done some mods to get it where I want it. I've welded crush tubes into the chassis, have heavy plate around it where the x member used to run, and some thick wall 50 x 50 RHS underneath the box using the flat mount point in the steering box which is welded back to the chassis rail and into the front x member. (More pics in Projects and Tutorials under SWIMBO's Ser 2 Tdi the beginning). I also found a straight drop arm (not the cranked Defender drop arm) and this lines up with all the original track/steering rods! It all fits just behind the Series front grille to.

Hmm...... I've been reading on other forums about using electric assisted power steering columns out of Corsas aka Holden Barinas, anybody heard of this? would it be wise adding power steering above the relay?

I was about to make a similar suggestion. Lot of cars out there now with electric assist.
