Grey Smoke from 2.25 litre diesel

    Hello All,

I was looking for some other information about the 2.25 litre diesel fitted to my Series 3 ute Baldrick and I came across this piece of information about a possible cause for the grey smoke

Fuel injection pump was driven off the camshaft by a skew gear which could wear, giving unstable pump timing and lots of light grey smoke on older engines (although stretched timing chain is very common and causes the same symptoms). Accessed Sunday, 18 August 2013 from, Land Rover, Range Rover engine history - by Glencoyne 4x4 (Thetford)

Has anyone came across this explaination of the smoke before?

The site does have some interesting information about the range of Land Rover engines too not just diesel.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

White/grey smoke in a diesel is usually associated with unburnt fuel, so the explanation given is plausible as the fuel would be injected probably too late,

    G'day Charlie,

    Thank you for the reply.

Baldrick gets a compression test and injector inspection tomorrow to find out its state of health from an independent umpire.

    Kind Regards

if its at idle and goes away once it warms up its most likely rings

if it does it under load after it warms up then its most likely low injection pressure or late injection

if it does it all the time it may be the oil rings or valve stem seals.

    G'day Dave.

It does the latter a constant little stream of grey at start up and keeps going even an hour later. Not a big massive cloud of choking fumes and definitely not black; it is sort of a very light grey/white. You have to look very carefully from a distance to work out if there is smoke coming out of the tail pipe and it can be hard to spot. Well should find out more about it tomorrow.

    Kind Regards

    The verdict is...

    Hello All,

The verdict on Baldrick is .... find a mechanic with the correct size fittings to be able to do a compression test on a Series 3 Land Rover! "Oh all my stuff is bigger than those injectors - I can't help you!"

My thoughts, were today, "What is it about Land Rover Series 3 Diesel 2.25 litre made in 1976 that was so hard to understand?" This was after a telephone call and an email to them a couple of weeks ago.

I am pretty sure that I made it clear that it was a Series 3 Land Rover built in 1976 with a 2.25 litre diesel ......

Looks like it will be a couple of reconnoitring trips to track down mechanics in the area, find out if they have the right size tools and then trailer Baldrick to them. I had wanted a mobile mechanic to come here so I could find out if it was worth spending any more money on Baldrick. You know have a convenient service.

    Kind Regards

You should pull the plate of the side of the pump and rotate the flywheel to the correct point ( depends on your diesel) and then check if the pump is timed correctly.

Easy and cheap to do and just eliminates one more thing

    Imagine the scene

    Hello All,

Sometime during the day a deer-stalker wearing individual, smoking a pipe and accompanied by a friend approaches Baldrick. The hat clad one lifts the bonnet and gasps, "Oh my God Watson, it is just too hideous to look upon. Moriarty has descended to an all time low".

"What is it Holmes?" says his friend, Watson.

Watson approaches the opened hood and furtively stares down and is both totally shocked and transfixed; then in a strangled voice manages to barely utter - "oh the outrageous Devil - Moriarty. There is a Series 3 diesel engine with a 2.25 litre capacity installed in that stock standard Series 3 diesel Long wheel base Land Rover - manufactured in 1976! Where will it end Sherlock!"

Yes I know I should build a bridge and eat some cement!

    Kind Regards

Is it burning heaps of oil, heavy on fuel or smoking you to death?
If not i would ignore the problem and just enjoy driving the vehicle!
It is so easy to get obsessed with little problems that at the end of the day won't really make much difference to the general running of he vehicle!
