Hi Jerry,
I have not actually put an overdrive in after the gearbox but I have removed one from the gearbox while it was in there. It wasn't that hard to do, much easier if you have a proper socket to get the nut off that holds the the gear on the output shaft of the gearbox. So I would say it would not be too difficult to put one on either. You don't need to remove the floor of tunnel, just get to it from under the middle seat and under the car.
