    Clutch Query..........

    I've recently removed the original gearbox from my series 3 and have installed another series 3 box which I've overhauled with new bearings, seals, etc.
    I also fitted a new clutch and master cylinder as the originals failed while trying to bleed the clutch

    On my first few test drives everything seemed fine the new gearbox being very quiet and no strange noises, clutch working fine and no oil leaks

    However, I've just taken the car out for a spin today and now the clutch is slipping in 3rd and fourth gear Previous to the swap over I've never had a problem with the clutch, so am a bit confused as to why it would start slipping ??

    Any ideas please ?? Is the clutch adjustable at all ??

    I did notice when I removed the gearbox that the holden motor has a leak on the rear seal, could oil have gotten on to the clutch plate ?? The only other thing I've done was to set the clutch pedal a bit higher so it's in line with the brake pedal.

    Any thoughts please as I'd hate to have to remove the gearbox again if I can help it.

    1. Oil from the main seal will certainly cause slipping - should be able to check for oil depending on the conversion.

    2. Lifting the clutch pedal, depending what you adjusted, may have removed the free play on the pedal - if there is no free play to allow the piston in the M/C to fully return, the clutch will slip.

    Thanks John, I spent a couple of hours adjusting the pedal and master cylinder and seem to have solved the clutch slipping problem

    I'm not concerned about the rear oil seal leak as I want to start the tdi conversion once I've tested the gearbox for a few kilometres. The gearbox is working fine but is a bit difficult to engage 1st and 2nd gear compared to the old box. I'm hoping things may improve after a few trips, or I'm open to suggestions to any adjustments that might be needed.

    My other question is whether the overdrive can be fitted to this gearbox with it being in the car ?? I found it tricky to remove the old box with overdrive fitted.

    Hi Jerry,

    I have not actually put an overdrive in after the gearbox but I have removed one from the gearbox while it was in there. It wasn't that hard to do, much easier if you have a proper socket to get the nut off that holds the the gear on the output shaft of the gearbox. So I would say it would not be too difficult to put one on either. You don't need to remove the floor of tunnel, just get to it from under the middle seat and under the car.

    The Roverdrive in our Series III was fitted without removing anything other than the floor plates and transmission tunnel.
