    Country QLD farm find '73 SIII SWB

    After 3 years of trying to rebuild a 1956 S1 86", I gave it up (My wife's patience ran out) and sold the project to someone with more experience and skill. The rust / rot defeated me.

    So I was on the look out for a drivable Series LR that was generally good nick and only needed improved over time.

    I found it 3 weeks ago. Now named "Jock" (We're from Scotland) this was a 40 year old SIII that had been on the farm out west it's whole life. It was originally a soft top with an ugly home made hard top.

    Rust and Rot negligible, and it's been work-maintained, (ie important stuff looked after, cosmetics not so much).

    After several washes, Jet and sponge and T-cut and sealed, it's looking much healthier.

    It's running a bit rough though. I swear it ran smoother before I cleaned it. I've been through the LT and HT side, and getting strong sparks to the plugs, the compression is a bit low on all cyls, 1-80psi, 2-90, 3-70, 4-60 but no smoke and it pulls well even in 2nd. It's been run on unleaded for years, so I'm expecting an engine overhaul at some point in the future, but meantime I just want to get it running a bit smoother. It's got a Bendix Stromberg carb and I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the mixture as the plugs were a bit sooty, so I'm guessing the mix is a bit rich.

    Any advice gratefully received...

    Hello (also) from Brisbane.

    Nice find you have there - always good to see another SWB around the place.

    A quick question - is it an Australian assembled model or a import from the UK? The external fan cover on the LHS guard looks like the common UK three pointed version - I thought the Australian models had a round cover. Mine has anyway.

    Ian,

    Hello again.

    Presumably the compliance plate on top of the grille panel or on the firewall there may be a PMC assembly plate.

    Checked, and it looks pretty legit Australian compliance. Manufacturers plate on Firewall says Leyland Corp, Sydney and the Australian compliance plate seems normal. Maybe the side heater grille panel has been replaced.

    Can anyone guide me to a website for identifying Bendix Technico Stromberg carbs, and then any info on tuning them.

    Have a search for the old Holden web site. Lot of info on there about them. I have been trying to tune one up recently but ended up putting a zenith on as I don't have easy access to lots of jets to play with. I actually bought a variable main jet from Repco but still needed to play with the power jet system and it all got too hard.
