    Steering Damper

    Hello All Series 3 People,

The Land Rover parts book has the Steering Damper for a Series 3 - is STC786.

Presumably the same damper fit either SWB or LWB Petrol or diesel powered?

According to STC786 STEERING DAMPER ASSY | Defender 1985>: Suspension: Shock Absorber | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series Prices can vary to the Britpart made item from 11.9 GBP to the Genuine Land Rover Part at 75.88 GBP.

What brand of Steering damper Land Rover Part Number: STC786 are you using - how much did you pay for it and whom did you get it from?

Would you get the same part from the same supplier again?

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

I found the original the best but you could use a 2000 series Procomp 220230 | Steering Damper - Gas Pro Comp ES2000

    Lionel,

    Hello again from Brisbane.

I bought mine from Rob Leimers Land Rover in Johannesburg recently for around $25 after the exchange rate conversion. Came home via Zimbabwe in my suitcase.

Leimers sourced it from a local supplier and it came over the counter without an original box - so I suppose it could be any South African brand, or perhaps an import from Britpart or Bearmach.

Haven't driven anywhere with it yet, so no reason to praise or condemn it. I think FWD in Yerongpilly supply the dampers at a LROC price for around $55. Again, I don't know what brand they are - likely a UK import as well.

Hope not to buy the same part again - the one on the previous farm truck lasted for years or so it seemed.

Doubt this is very helpful, but you did ask.

    Cheers,

It perhaps should be pointed out that the steering damper was optional equipment (from mid sixties) on all Series Landrovers except the V8 (standard) as far as I can tell from the parts books. The mounting brackets for it became standard in 1978, which suggests it was a very common option by then.

This does suggest that which damper you fit is not going to be very critical. The first three Landrovers I owned (Series 1,2,2a) did not have one, and never missed it.
