    Electronic ignition inquiry

    Hello again.

Probably been answered one way or another many times - but here's another go.

I have been thinking of fitting an electronic ignition kit to my ute - nominally a 1975 Series 3 SWB with a 2.25 litre petrol motor. The type of kit to apply should be determined by the distributor type fitted to the motor I believe.

However, the original motor and the rest of the truck apparently parted company at some time in the past 38 years, as the present motor (E/N 25211978F) apparently cohabited for a time with a 2A of possibly 1969 vintage or thereabouts. Not unusual for vehicles of this age.

So, I guess I should be looking at a kit for the distributor that is fitted to a later model Series 2A petrol motor - would that be a Lucas DM2 distributor? How do you tell from looking at the thing in the engine bay?

The second part of my inquiry is whether the electronic insert kits are actually worthwhile fitting? The claims are for obvious improvement and reduced ignition maintenance, but there are all sorts of ads around claiming improvements for all sorts of things - thinking possibly of the large red and yellow billboards......

The final part of my inquiry is about brands - the two common bands you see on eBay here and in the UK are Accuspark and Powerspark. There may well be others floating around. Are any better than others, all OK or to be avoided?

    Cheers,

The v8 County I have has the original distributor with an after market electronic ignition kit installed, basically remove the points and condenser and replace with a hall effect sensor and a chopper (its a castellated piece that sits on the centre shaft and has a castellation for each cylinder to generate the pulse) and an extra box external to mount near the coil which wires up to the existing wiring.

I can't remember the brand but I can go have a look as it has saved me doing the points every 5000 km, and if it does break I have a set of points and condenser in the toolbox which take about 5 minutes to change back.

Years ago I replaced the points in my Rover car with a Crane Cams ignition system Crane Cams | High performance multiple-spark CD ignition for racing or street and the reason I chose Crane, is because I asked my mechanic friend first, who asked his colleagues who told him which was a good-quality system and which was rubbish.

Anyway, it performed faultlessly for 10 years and is still in the car; however; even with a good bit of kit like this, all you are really doing is replacing the points and possibly getting a stronger spark. For me, saving $30 per set of points 5 times year was initiative enough back then, but now I would consider replacing the distributor with something better, such as an ignition controller which takes its timing directly off the crankshaft.

Which is I why on my Sunbeam, I am fitting Megajolt KWD's Megajolt Ignition
which can be fitted to any old car and guarantees the best performance all of the time and is programmable as well. This of course depends on how often you use the car; how original you want it to look; and whether you feel competent enough to fit and wire the parts and use a computer to programme the ignition map; as well as the initial cost.

I am also going to fit Megasquirt to my Disco and bin the distributor

    Cheers Charlie

I replaced the points in a GQ TB42 Patrol with a Pertonix Hall effect unit. Worked very well, and also fitted a Megajolt/Edis system to a Rodeo when the original electronic ignition system failed. It worked brilliantly, better than original & fully tuneable.
PM me for more information if you like
